Get a behind-the-scenes look at organic gardening in the Inn’s kitchen garden. Understand the science that transforms garden and seafood items into delicious meals. Uncover the local secrets of Alaskan organic gardening and how to prepare, cook and preserve local food favorites. Our Cordon Bleu chef shows you the tips and tricks of professional knife skills, and teaches you to be an expert in selecting and using the best knives. His insights for cooking and preparing food are easy to apply in your own kitchen! You will learn how to smoke Alaskan halibut or salmon, learn how the sun and temperature affect greens grown in our Northern Garden and peek into making sourdough bread as part of the Alaska food story. After all the learning you will enjoy an individually served tasting of smoked fish, vegetables from the garden, sourdough bread and finish up by making (and eating) home-made ice cream! Legends & Lies
Travel back to those bygone days and experience life in a Gold Rush saloon. The Legends and Lies Gold Rush Saloon Experience takes you back in time to the wilds of Alaska circa 1897. The Klondike Gold Rush was going full fury with more than 100,000 stampeders on their way North to find gold and glory. The saloon was a vital part of life for the stampeder, the place to get news, make deals, play cards, and find companionship. Skagway boasted 80 saloons in a town only 10 blocks long. Skagway was a boom town full of hope, despair, and drama - all played out in a saloon! You'll learn to make classic stampeder libations, beverages that warmed the hearts of the prospectors, both the lucky and the downtrodden. You will use ingredients straight from the Inn's culinary garden and make two different traditional drinks (with a choice of alcohol or no alcohol recipes.) As you sample the beverages and nibble on an array of snacks including salmon or cheese quesadillas, halibut mini-cakes, chips with homemade rhubarb salsa, and reindeer pig-in-a-blanket, you'll hear stories, fact and fiction, and music played on an upright piano. Finish with a Prohibition era Shrub and Iceworm toast to your willing or unwilling induction into the great Order of the Sourdough.
Glacier Dog Sled Demonstration by Helicopter

Moments after departing the heli-base, you will enjoy a breathtaking view only seen by few. Your flight takes you over ice spires, deep blue crevasses, and meltwater pools. After arriving at the heliport, you will be outfitted in glacier boots and given a safety briefing by our friendly tour attendants. Your pilot will choose two different glacier landings among the 36 named glaciers stretched across 1,500 square miles of the Juneau Icefield; a few landing possibilities include the Herbert, Taku, Norris, Gilkey, Hole in the Wall or the famous Mendenhall Glacier. Moments after departing the heli-base, you will enjoy a breathtaking view only seen by few. Your flight takes you over ice spires, deep blue crevasses, and meltwater pools. With approximately 50 minutes of helicopter time you will have plenty of opportunities to take in views of steep alpine ridges, lush rainforest, and the incredible glaciers below. For an up-close opportunity to appreciate this ancient landscape, your pilot will land in two different locations, where you will continue the tour on foot for approximately 15 minutes at each location. Dog Sledding Summer Camp
Join us on an excursion where you will learn about Alaska’s official state sport with a trip to Dog Sledding Summer Camp. Your adventure begins on the breathtaking drive along Gastineau Channel, through the historic AJ Gold Mine site and into the remote and scenic Sheep Creek Valley. As you arrive at the summer camp training site, you will be greeted by a professional dog musher and some of the state’s most famous athletes: the Alaskan huskies! You will receive an educational tour of the camp, visit a 19th-century replica of an Iditarod Outpost and enjoy fresh baked cookies. Next, climb aboard a comfortable wheeled cart and relax as your energetic Alaskan husky team whisks you along the one-and-a-half-mile trail through the beautiful landscape. You’ll return to Dog Sledding Summer Camp for your chance to meet the dogs and snuggle the next generation of great Alaskan athletes: sled dog puppies! This family-friendly excursion is truly an authentic Alaskan experience. Enjoy a ride through the scenic Sheep Creek Valley in a wheeled-cart pulled by a team of Alaska Huskies! Our dog camp is complete with 120 huskies, including sled dog puppies. It is located on the site of the historic AJ Mine, so you’ll see mining relics on your way to camp. Lighthouse Totems & Eagles Excursion
Join our Alaskan captain and their crew at our dock in Ward Cove – which was once home to North America’s largest operating pulp mill and a working salmon cannery – to board either the Lighthouse Endeavor or Totem Princess. Once aboard, you’ll get to settle into the inside heated main cabin or a seat on the outside observation deck, as you leave the dock for your cruise. Sip a hot chocolate or freshly-brewed coffee and keep your eye out for plentiful American bald eagle sightings. Your captain will navigate the vessel along our developed shoreline while our crew helps you spot the many eagle’s nests along our route. You’ll arrive in front of Totem Bight State Park, home to an Alaskan native clan house and 14 towering Tlingit and Haida hand-carved cedar totem poles, where you will learn about Ketchikan’s vibrant Alaska Native culture as well as the history of the park. We’ll provide you with beautiful, panoramic views of the entire park from the water, and an opportunity to get your photo taken with this stunning site. About halfway through the trip, you’ll leave the developed shoreline to head out to Guard Island Lighthouse, perched on its own island near the opening to Clarence Strait. (This fascinating landmark was established in 1904 and is still in operation today!) While here, take a minute to breathe in the fresh sea air and keep your eye out for the possibility of some of our favorite marine mammals – seals, sea lions, and, in May and September, sometimes even humpback and orca whales! You also may get a chance to see any number of seabirds, such as great blue heron, pigeon guillemots, or gulls. On your way back to Ward Cove, your captain will bring your tour vessel along the neighboring island of Gravina, showcasing beautiful views of the old growth Tongass National Forest, our world’s largest temperate rainforest, and give you the opportunity to possibly spot some land-based wildlife, such as Sitka Blacktail deer or – if you’re really lucky! – a black bear. Throughout the tour you’ll also get the chance to learn about the unique lifestyle of living on a remote Alaskan island directly from the locals who make this place our home! Rainforest Bicycle Tour
During the Gold Rush, Dyea was Skagway’s rival city, booming with 10,000 people. Now nature has reclaimed the land, leaving only ghosts of its Gold Rush past. This scenic tour starts with an informative van tour along the spectacular coastal inlets to the west of Skagway. Your professional guides tell you stories of the rush of 98’ and inform you about the ecology of this rich area. After a bicycle and safety orientation, your guide leads your small group on a bike route that covers five miles of flat terrain for easy pedaling. You ride through the lush rainforest, visit historic ruins, see the Chilkoot trailhead, and venture out to the coastal tidal flats where eagles, salmon, colorful wildflowers, and dazzling mountains are often in view. Do not be surprised if you spot a bear! Leave the crowds behind, get some mild exercise, and take in the natural wonders of Alaska on a bicycle!

Mountain bike or hybrid are our most popular bike rental. Hardtrail mountain bikes or hybrid bikes are great options for exploring town and nearby trails. Specialized Hardroc Disc mountain bikes and Specialized Crosstrail and Ariel hybrids (with rear racks) are available for rent.
Haines Bicycle Rental
Our most popular rental bike is the all day mountain bike or hybrid bike. Hardtrail mountain bikes or hybrid bikes are great options for exploring town and nearby trails. If you choose to go electric, we have fantastic e-bike options with the all-purpose Trek Verve 2+ model.
Haines Bike, Hike & Brew
See the sites in beautiful Haines, Alaska, followed by a sampling of a locally brewed beer! We meet at our bike shop for bike fitting and orientation. From our shop, it’s a scenic 2-mile coastal ride to the Battery Point trailhead. We’ll hike a mile and a half through the spruce, hemlock, and cottonwood rainforest environment on a well-maintained trail to the beach at Battery Point. This is a great place to spot seals, sea lions, whales, and many types of birds. We’ll hike back out to our bikes and ride along the waterfront into town, stopping at a great photo spot. From there, we bike up to the Haines Brewing Company to sample their locally crafted beers (root beer and tea are also available.) The Haines Brewing Company occupies a state-of-the-art building on Main St. in downtown Haines. We’ll stop in and sample three 5 oz. pours of their locally crafted beers. After tasting we’ll ride the final mile back to our bike shop to finish the tour. E-Bikes are available for this tour. Guests can choose to use a Trek Verve+ 2 E-Bike for the riding portion of this tour.
Glacial Fjord Bicycle Tour
We depart town by van and head to our starting point along the Lutak Inlet. As you pedal along the flat, paved road carved into the steep-walled fjord, you might spot bald eagles, salmon, whales, sea lions, seals, and even bears. We ride to the end of the inlet where the Chilkoot River joins the ocean and salmon congregate for their ancient quest to reach the spawning grounds. We continue riding along the river to Chilkoot Lake, a 3-mile long lake surrounded by glaciated mountain peaks. Take in the gorgeous views across the emerald lake, surrounded by glaciers, waterfalls, and jagged mountain peaks. This is a wonderful way to combine fresh Alaskan air and mild exercise in beautiful Haines, Alaska. E-Bikes are available for this tour. Guests may choose to use a Trek Verve+ 2 pedal-assist bike for this ride.
Chilkoot Lake Bike & Paddle
Combine two outstanding activities on a 12-mile bike ride along a glacially carved fjord followed by kayaking across Chilkoot Lake! Head out from Haines by bicycle on a winding, paved road on the shores of the Lutak Inlet and take in the dramatic view of the fjord waters where whales, seals, and sea lions can be seen. We'll continue up the Chilkoot River, following the path of the spawning salmon where brown bears are frequently seen. From here, we’ll enjoy a picnic lunch. After lunch, we'll get fitted for our kayak portion of the tour. We'll kayak the emerald waters of the vast lake which is uncrowded and surrounded by breathtaking views. Waterfalls tumble from thousands of feet above, and the lush green forest touches the shoreline. We’ll end the tour by driving back into town. After a quick drive through the small town of Haines, we’ll drop you at the ferry dock.

Haines Chilkat E-Bike Adventure
Visit the Mud Flats of the glacially fed Chilkat Valley on this 7-mile E-bike ride. We depart the bike shop and ride up the hill into the historic Fort Seward. After exploring and discussing this recent history, we ride down to the mud flats of the Chilkat Valley. Here you can enjoy a walk to along the shore and experience the serenity of the glacial valley breeze. You may witness bald eagles, coastal brown bears and even marine mammals fishing for salmon. We ride back to town through a rainforest neighborhood where locals have built their own unique homesteads. Before heading back to the shop, we’ll stop at a view point across the harbor where you can see the town and the Cathedral Mountains towering above.
Laughton Glacier Expedition
Unveil the Wonders of Skagway You will board the train for a nearly one-hour journey on the White Pass scenic railway, filled with spectacular waterfalls, rushing rivers, jagged mountain peaks, and complemented by Klondike Gold Rush history. At Glacier Station, you will begin a fully guided round-trip hike of up to eight miles, in the clean mountain air. Your hike begins on a well-maintained trail meandering through the surreal beauty of an old-growth rainforest valley that is home to an abundance of moose, bear, mountain goats and other wild animals. The trail winds along the raging Skagway River, meeting it in places where you will take memorable photos before you turn into the valley containing the majestic Laughton Glacier. You will take a break at the “lookout” and bask in the splendor of the 360-degree views available there. Leaving the lookout and proceeding toward the glacier, you will notice that the route has become more rugged, though still manageable. Approaching the glacier, the terrain changes dramatically as you leave the rocky riverbed and pick your way through a boulder field and onto the glacier. You are certain to enjoy the breathtaking views, exposed crevasses and moulins, and other fascinating features of the great frozen river of ice, ever-changing in the harsh Alaskan environment. Hot drinks will be offered by your guides while you are perched on the glacier. Upon return to the trailhead, you will be greeted with our traditional “Bush Buffet”, complete with cold beverages. Relax and enjoy the ride back to town on “The Scenic Railway of the World”. With a ratio of no more than six guests per guide, you will receive extraordinary customer service. In May and early June, glacier travel may be limited or impossible due to snow on the glacier.

Laughton Glacier Snowshoe Expedition
This trip combines a scenic rail journey aboard the historic White Pass & Yukon Route Railway with a wilderness snowshoe trek toward the magnificent Laughton Glacier, an adventure you won’t soon forget. You will board the train for a nearly one-hour scenic journey filled with spectacular waterfalls, rushing rivers, jagged mountain peaks and complemented by Klondike Gold Rush history. At Glacier Station, guides will outfit you with snowshoes and other gear before you begin a fully guided and narrated three- to five-mile round trip snowshoe hike. Revel in the clean mountain air, amidst the surreal beauty of an old-growth forest. The magnificent, snow-blanketed, sub-alpine rainforest valley is home to an abundance of moose, bear, mountain goats and other wild animals. This spectacular trail winds along the raging Skagway River, where you will take memorable photos before continuing toward a smaller valley containing the Laughton Glacier. The canopy opens as you leave the forest and reach a panoramic viewpoint known as “the lookout”. This is where you can take a break as well as photos while enjoying the breathtaking views of Alaska’s winter wonderland in the spring. From here, some may choose to continue a ways toward the majestic Laughton Glacier, while others may make this the apex of the hike. Whatever you choose, you’ll be invigorated by the raw beauty of the Alaskan wilds and be offered hot drinks by your guides. Upon your return to the trailhead, you will be greeted with our traditional “Bush Buffet”, complete with snacks and assorted beverages.
