What We Will Do
Combine two outstanding activities on a 12-mile bike ride along a glacially carved fjord followed by kayaking across Chilkoot Lake!
Head out from Haines by bicycle on a winding, paved road on the shores of the Lutak Inlet and take in the dramatic view of the fjord waters where whales, seals, and sea lions can be seen. We'll continue up the Chilkoot River, following the path of the spawning salmon where brown bears are frequently seen. From here, we’ll enjoy a picnic lunch. After lunch, we'll get fitted for our kayak portion of the tour. We'll kayak the emerald waters of the vast lake which is uncrowded and surrounded by breathtaking views. Waterfalls tumble from thousands of feet above, and the lush green forest touches the shoreline.
We’ll end the tour by driving back into town. After a quick drive through the small town of Haines, we’ll drop you at the ferry dock.

*Meeting Location: Please meet us at our bike shop located at 24 Portage St, Haines, AK. We are about a 5 minute walk from the cruise docks. Please arrive at least 15 minutes prior to your tour departure time.
About Us
It was a 2-month sea kayaking trip through Southeast Alaska that became a life-changing experience for Sockeye Cycle owner Thom Ely. In 1987 Thom moved to Haines full-time and bought an existing bike shop and in 1988 our first tours were offered.
Today, we are the oldest operating full-service bicycle business in Alaska. Our touring expertise is in our own region of Southeast Alaska and Northern Canada. We are staffed with well qualified seasonal guides and veteran Alaskan locals and offer a variety of tours ranging from a few hours in duration to day trips and 11-day excursions.
Whether you take a day tour or one of our extended adventures, we guarantee that you will get a taste of the spirit and hospitality of the North as only a local company can show you.
Cancellation Policy
8+ days before date of the tour or rental, reservations are refundable minus 5% for booking and processing fees.
Reservations cancelled 2-7 days from the start time will receive a 50% refund. Reservations are not refundable 48 hours or less from the start of the activity or rental. Some of our tours require you to bring a passport. We do not offer refunds for guests showing up unprepared. Please check if your tour requires you to bring a passport and plan accordingly.
Sockeye Cycle Co. retains the right to cancel a tour for any reason, in which case you will receive a full refund. We are prepared and supply gear for most weather scenarios and rarely cancel our tours due to weather.

White Pass Train & Bike Tour
You board the historic White Pass & Yukon Route narrow-gauge railroad for a scenic hour and a half trip through the coastal mountains to British Columbia, Canada. Glacial Fjord Bicycle Tour
We depart town by van and head to our starting point along the Lutak Inlet. As you pedal along the flat, paved road carved into the steep-walled fjord, you might spot bald eagles, salmon, whales, sea lions, seals, and even bears. We ride to the end of the inlet where the Chilkoot River joins the ocean and salmon congregate for their ancient quest to reach the spawning grounds. We continue riding along the river to Chilkoot Lake, a 3-mile long lake surrounded by glaciated mountain peaks. Take in the gorgeous views across the emerald lake, surrounded by glaciers, waterfalls, and jagged mountain peaks. This is a wonderful way to combine fresh Alaskan air and mild exercise in beautiful Haines, Alaska. E-Bikes are available for this tour. Guests may choose to use a Trek Verve+ 2 pedal-assist bike for this ride.

Mountain bike or hybrid are our most popular bike rental. Hardtrail mountain bikes or hybrid bikes are great options for exploring town and nearby trails. Specialized Hardroc Disc mountain bikes and Specialized Crosstrail and Ariel hybrids (with rear racks) are available for rent.

Rainforest Bicycle Tour
During the Gold Rush, Dyea was Skagway’s rival city, booming with 10,000 people. Now nature has reclaimed the land, leaving only ghosts of its Gold Rush past. This scenic tour starts with an informative van tour along the spectacular coastal inlets to the west of Skagway. Your professional guides tell you stories of the rush of 98’ and inform you about the ecology of this rich area. After a bicycle and safety orientation, your guide leads your small group on a bike route that covers five miles of flat terrain for easy pedaling. You ride through the lush rainforest, visit historic ruins, see the Chilkoot trailhead, and venture out to the coastal tidal flats where eagles, salmon, colorful wildflowers, and dazzling mountains are often in view. Do not be surprised if you spot a bear! Leave the crowds behind, get some mild exercise, and take in the natural wonders of Alaska on a bicycle!
Haines Bike, Hike & Brew
See the sites in beautiful Haines, Alaska, followed by a sampling of a locally brewed beer! We meet at our bike shop for bike fitting and orientation. From our shop, it’s a scenic 2-mile coastal ride to the Battery Point trailhead. We’ll hike a mile and a half through the spruce, hemlock, and cottonwood rainforest environment on a well-maintained trail to the beach at Battery Point. This is a great place to spot seals, sea lions, whales, and many types of birds. We’ll hike back out to our bikes and ride along the waterfront into town, stopping at a great photo spot. From there, we bike up to the Haines Brewing Company to sample their locally crafted beers (root beer and tea are also available.) The Haines Brewing Company occupies a state-of-the-art building on Main St. in downtown Haines. We’ll stop in and sample three 5 oz. pours of their locally crafted beers. After tasting we’ll ride the final mile back to our bike shop to finish the tour. E-Bikes are available for this tour. Guests can choose to use a Trek Verve+ 2 E-Bike for the riding portion of this tour.

Haines Chilkat E-Bike Adventure
Visit the Mud Flats of the glacially fed Chilkat Valley on this 7-mile E-bike ride. We depart the bike shop and ride up the hill into the historic Fort Seward. After exploring and discussing this recent history, we ride down to the mud flats of the Chilkat Valley. Here you can enjoy a walk to along the shore and experience the serenity of the glacial valley breeze. You may witness bald eagles, coastal brown bears and even marine mammals fishing for salmon. We ride back to town through a rainforest neighborhood where locals have built their own unique homesteads. Before heading back to the shop, we’ll stop at a view point across the harbor where you can see the town and the Cathedral Mountains towering above.
Skagway E-Bike & Brew
Discover the heart of the Klondike Gold Rush while cruising around Skagway on an E-Bike Tour followed by a tasting at the Skagway Brewing Company! Our pedal assisted E-Bikes (Trek Allant+) feel like riding a normal bike but faster and easier! Cruise through downtown Skagway on our E-Bike Tour out to a historic cemetery where your guide will bring the stories of the intrepid Gold Rush stampeders to life. Leave your bikes for a short hike to a breathtaking waterfall. Feel the wind in your hair as you effortlessly zoom up to a splendid lookout over the town. Takshanuk ATV Tour from Haines
When you arrive at the trail head your knowledgeable guide will instruct your family’s driver on how to operate the Kawasaki Mules. Don’t want to drive? No problem! We can accommodate those who want to ride along and enjoy the views! The mules are equipped with convertible tops for those traditional Southeast Alaska days and your guide can provide you with blankets, gloves and rain ponchos if necessary. Start your journey up the trail and enjoy the lush forest and scenic views peeking through the trees. The first mile of trail has 17 switchbacks and gains the most elevation, starting at sea level and taking you to 1,100 feet in elevation for your first stop at our exclusive mountain lodge. Here you’ll take in the breathtaking views of the beautiful Lynn Canal and Coastal mountain range. You’ll also be treated to fresh baked cookies straight out of the oven along with coffee, hot chocolate, tea and lemonade. After the lodge you’ll continue on the trail for another scenic mile, passing cascading waterfalls and crossing crystal clear mountain streams. Your guide will make a stop at a scenic alpine lake to take in the views and scan the mountain side for wildlife. The natural lake is fed by cascading waterfalls down the backside of Mt. Ripinsky. When the season is right you can pick wild Alaskan blueberries and salmon berries that are abundant in this area. As you continue to the end of the trail at 1,500 feet, be prepared to catch your breath for the stunning vista of Chilkoot Lake and the Lutak inlet. A gorgeous alpine meadow awaits those who wish to take a short hike up the hillside to enjoy the wildflowers that soak up the sunshine at this higher elevation. The return portion of your tour will take you back to our exclusive lodge where you will be served a deliciously prepared beer-battered halibut and roasted chicken meal. Vegetarian meals and special dietary requests are available with a 24-hour notice. After this fantastic homemade meal and time to relax in the lodge, you will make your way back to the trail head. For those who took the Takshanuk Trail bus to the trail head, your return trip to town will include a scenic tour of Haines and Fort William H. Seward, the first permanent army base in Alaska.

Haines Wilderness Odyssey By Jet Boat (Haines Departure)
A Truly Unique Way to Explore! Explore the tributaries of the Chilkat River by Jet Boat. Expert captains are adept at spotting wildlife along the way, and the jet boats provide a great platform for photography! Board a bus for a 30-minute ride on the Haines Scenic Byway into the heart of the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve to the river dock. On your narrated drive, you will enjoy stories of the history of the valley. Where the road ends, the real Alaska begins and so does your adventure. Board your boat and part company with civilization. During your time on the Chilkat River, traverse many different channels and travel at least 20 miles into the wilderness. Your vessel is specially designed for navigation on this silt-laden river, which is the only access to a remote, roadless portion of the preserve. Your open-topped boat allows you to view and photograph the majestic scenery and animals seen in an unhindered fashion. Warm outerwear and blankets will be provided. The staff is friendly and welcoming and will entertain you with tales of their backcountry lifestyle and some "real Alaska" stories. View bald eagles and their massive nests in their natural habitat. The preserve has the best moose habitat in the valley and although there are no guarantees, the chances of spotting moose and bears are very good. Have your cameras ready in case the wildlife provides a once-in-a-lifetime photo opportunity. After returning to the dock, you'll enjoy a riverside picnic. Note: We can accommodate dietary restrictions with a minimum of 48 hours of advanced notice, including gluten-free, vegan, vegetarian, allergies, etc. Itinerary 1. 15min: Your friendly guide will meet you near the Haines Cruise Ship Dock. Before hitting the road you will have the opportunity to get to know your guide and ask any questions that you might still have about your upcoming excursion. 2. 45 min: From here, we will depart for a breathtaking drive up the Haines Scenic Byway to the jet boat launch. 3. 15 min: When you arrive at the boat launch, you’ll meet up with the boat captain and swap out your shoes for rubber river boots. Chilkoot Lake Nature and Wildlife Viewing - Haines Departure
Meet your naturalist guide for a small-group driving tour to scenic and wildlife-rich Chilkoot Lake State Park. This park has it all: a turquoise lake surrounded by snowy mountain peaks, a salmon-filled river flowing into the sea, and important Tlingit cultural sights. Bald eagles, harbor seals, and brown bears are often seen here. As you drive through the park, your guide knows the best places to stop for scenery and the possibility of wildlife spotting. Supplied with extra binoculars and a powerful spotting scope to bring the wildlife in close, your guide explains how the animals fit into the Chilkoot's complex ecosystem. May, June, and July feature an explosion of wildflowers with bald eagles nesting along the lush river. Beginning in August, pink salmon-the smallest and most abundant of the Pacific salmon varieties-begin their run up the Chilkoot River to spawn. This is the best opportunity to see brown bear as they are often witnessed feeding along the banks of the river. Make sure to bring your camera to take advantage of the numerous photo opportunities.
Spirit Art Woodcarving Class
Participants will start by choosing a piece of cottonwood bark from Tresham's collection, and then start to visualize what image will be realized from it. Tresham will help guide you through the design process and then introduce woodcarving principles using hand carving tools. Tresham will help guide you through each step in the process of revealing your spirit image. When the carving is finished, you will sand it and put a transparent finish on it that will bring out the color and grain. You get to take the finished carving with you when you go.
Fjords of the Inside Passage Kayaking Tour from Haines
Paddle with knowledgeable guides just outside of Haines, Alaska along the longest and deepest Fjord in North America. Experience beautiful views and enjoy opportunities to see marine wildlife from your tandem kayak. Upon arrival to Haines you will be greeted by your professional kayak guide for the ocean kayak trip of a lifetime. Your 2 person kayaks will be set up on the beach & will be a short 5-minute walk from the ferry pier. We’ll choose from a variety of beautiful ocean paddles depending on sea conditions and weather. Your tour guides will outfit you with a PFD (personal flotation device), spray skirt & paddles. After a safety briefing and equipment introduction/fitting, you are off and paddling. You will be on the water for about 2 hours. We have seen eagles, sea lions, seals, Dall's porpoise, humpback whales or other marine wildlife along our way. Your guide is an expert naturalist and will share their extensive knowledge about the fjord, marine wildlife and local geography. We will likely stop off at a remote beach to stretch your legs and enjoy the beautiful scenery of Southeast Alaska while enjoying a picnic style lunch. In an instance where ocean conditions aren’t suitable, we’ll head to our backup location on Chilkoot Lake which is a 30-minute van ride along the Chilkoot River. This backup location is surrounded by mountains with alpine waterfalls and salmon spawning beds. Itinerary * ~15 minutes -- Your friendly guide will meet you near the Haines Cruise Ship Dock where you will have the opportunity to get to know your guide and ask any questions that you might still have about your upcoming excursion. * ~5 minutes -- You will take a short walk to the adjacent beach where your 2-person kayaks will be waiting (1/3 km). * ~20 minutes -- Your guides will help you get fit with a PFD (life jacket), spray skirt and paddle at the onset of the tour. You’ll then receive a thorough safety briefing and become familiar with your kayak and equipment before boarding your stable 2-person kayak. * ~ 120-180 minutes -- We will spend the next 2-3 hours paddling on the ocean depending on the conditions and group preferences. There will be an opportunity to stop and get out of the kayak for a picnic style lunch before paddling back to your starting point. * ~15 minutes -- After arriving back at the beach, we will take the short walk back to our meeting spot at the Haines Cruise Ship Dock.
Chilkoot Trail Hike, Float, and Summit Drive Tour
Duration 6 hours ***Passport required for this tour***, as we cross the border into Canada before returning. Retrace the footsteps of the **Klondike Gold Rush stampeders** over the historic Chilkoot Trail and float back down on the beautiful Taiya River. Then experience the spectacular views of *alpine lakes, towering snow-capped peaks, and pristine forest* on a drive to the summit of the picturesque White Pass. Overview After a safety orientation, board a van and drive through Skagway to the backcountry and the historic town of Dyea. **Hike the first two miles of the scenic Chilkoot Trail**, the centerpiece of gold rush history in Skagway. This world famous trail was the main route to the riches of the Klondike during the gold rush. Now a tranquil place of incredible beauty, the trail winds through a lush rainforest alive with birds, animals and wildflowers. Enjoy the exercise, fresh air, beautiful scenery, pristine forests, and history of a bygone era as the trail takes you up and over the 350′ tall Saintly Hill. Along the way, your guide weaves an entertaining mix of natural history and Klondike folklore. Photo opportunities abound as you retrace the footsteps of the gold-hungry stampeder’s who forged this route over 100 years ago. Arrive at the banks of the Taiya River, where your 18-foot raft awaits for the **scenic float (no whitewater)** back to Dyea. The forest gives way to fields of beach greens and wild iris, and the granite walls of the fjords rise steeply to the snow-capped peaks and hanging glaciers. Enjoy a riverside snack of homemade cookies and a hot beverage with countless picture-perfect moments before loading up in the van and heading up to the White Pass summit. We’ll drive for about 45 minutes from the take-out to the top of the scenic White Pass. There are many photo opportunities of beautiful alpine lakes, glaciers, towering snow-capped peaks and pristine forests. After enjoying the spectacular scenery, we’ll return through the U.S. Border station and return to the town of Skagway.

Ketchikan Crabbing, Whales & Wildlife Excursion
We start off the tour with a nice trip over the whale watching grounds on a 12 mile run to the crabbing location. From there we put your names on the crab pot buoys, bait the pots and toss them over.
