What We Will Do
Join our Alaskan captain and their crew at our dock in Ward Cove – which was once home to North America’s largest operating pulp mill and a working salmon cannery – to board either the Lighthouse Endeavor or Totem Princess. Once aboard, you’ll get to settle into the inside heated main cabin or a seat on the outside observation deck, as you leave the dock for your cruise.
Sip a hot chocolate or freshly-brewed coffee and keep your eye out for plentiful American bald eagle sightings. Your captain will navigate the vessel along our developed shoreline while our crew helps you spot the many eagle’s nests along our route. You’ll arrive in front of Totem Bight State Park, home to an Alaskan native clan house and 14 towering Tlingit and Haida hand-carved cedar totem poles, where you will learn about Ketchikan’s vibrant Alaska Native culture as well as the history of the park. We’ll provide you with beautiful, panoramic views of the entire park from the water, and an opportunity to get your photo taken with this stunning site.
About halfway through the trip, you’ll leave the developed shoreline to head out to Guard Island Lighthouse, perched on its own island near the opening to Clarence Strait. (This fascinating landmark was established in 1904 and is still in operation today!) While here, take a minute to breathe in the fresh sea air and keep your eye out for the possibility of some of our favorite marine mammals – seals, sea lions, and, in May and September, sometimes even humpback and orca whales! You also may get a chance to see any number of seabirds, such as great blue heron, pigeon guillemots, or gulls.
On your way back to Ward Cove, your captain will bring your tour vessel along the neighboring island of Gravina, showcasing beautiful views of the old growth Tongass National Forest, our world’s largest temperate rainforest, and give you the opportunity to possibly spot some land-based wildlife, such as Sitka Blacktail deer or – if you’re really lucky! – a black bear.
Throughout the tour you’ll also get the chance to learn about the unique lifestyle of living on a remote Alaskan island directly from the locals who make this place our home!

Cook Your Catch Wilderness Dining
This is a bottom fish excursion where you will be fishing at depths of 100-300 feet for Rockfish and Cod. The excursion is operated in a 23ft open air skiff that accommodates a maximum of 6 passengers. After fishing for 3-4 hours, your party will arrive at our remote campsite where you will have a meal featuring your catch of the day. Guests are also served our delicious blueberry-rhubarb bread pudding for dessert, which is also prepared at camp. We provide tea, coffee, water sodas, a covered area to relax and iconic campfires. Our private campsite allows you to explore Ketchikan’s old growth forest and rocky beaches before and after your meal, giving you the chance to soak in the beauty of Alaska’s wilderness. Our culinary adventures give you a taste of all we have to offer. Enjoy a genuine Alaskan tradition as you have your catch prepared for you by our chef on a wilderness beach, at sea, or at a private table at the Alaska Fish House. 1) Cook Your Catch: Wilderness Dining Baranof Excursions has a remote campsite on a wilderness beach south of Ketchikan, ready for your arrival with your fresh-caught fish. Pull up with your guide in one of our boats, and step ashore to meet our campsite host. In just a few short minutes, we’ll quickly cook up a fresh bouillabaisse featuring your catch for you to enjoy in the comfort of a crackling beach fire, accompanied by beautiful views of the rainforest and the wild, rocky shoreline of our private beach. 2) Cook Your Catch: Private Dining At The Alaska Fish House On arrival back to town, our guides will lay out your fish at our fish cleaning station and help you determine which fish you want to eat and how to prepare it to best meet your culinary desires. Once you’ve made your choice, we’ll run your fresh catch-up to our chefs in the Alaska Fish House. By the time, you’re done taking your raingear off, washing your hands, and getting back into your civilian clothes, we’ll have a private table ready for you in our rustic-style dining room, and an expertly prepared meal on its way. Once you’ve settled at your table, enjoy a cold, Alaskan-brewed Denali beer or a glass of wine to accompany your meal and give yourself the chance to relax into an authentic Southeast Alaskan dining experience. (If you'd like, we encourage you to invite your family members that you left in town, and share in your catch). Be it maple-glazed salmon served on a bed of rice and locally-harvested sea asparagus, crab-stuffed halibut baked with finely sliced onions and garlic, battered and fried lingcod dipped in a homemade tartar sauce, or a pile of prawns grilled to perfection, you’ll find the locals eager to share the bounty of our oceans. And, trust us: there is nothing—and we mean nothing—that compares to the taste of fresh-caught fish prepared within just hours of the catch. Most of us will be quick to tell you there is no meal better than the meal you share with friends and family after a long day out fishing. We doubt you’ll be surprised that here at Baranof Excursions we’re right in culinary step with any good Southeast Alaskan. With us, your fishing experience doesn’t stop after you’ve reeled in your catch. In our opinion, the ultimate denouement of your Alaskan fishing adventure is in savoring the fruits of your labor in an authentic Alaskan dining experience. We are experts and find enjoyment in taking your fresh fish, putting you in a unique environment, and opening the way for you to break bread with your friends and family.
