Description
Carved from walrus tusk ivory, this kayaking hunter sports both a baleen harpoon and paddle. This piece measures 13" long.
Fresh walrus ivory carving by Daniel Apassingok, Jr. (Saint Lawrence Island Yupik). Hand carved from local subsistence-harvested walrus tusk. Daniel learned to carve from the elders who in turn learned from generations of elders passing their art down. Each piece is carved from a tusk that is cured for several weeks and is unique in color and pattern. Fresh ivory is legal for use by all Alaska Native artisans.
