Description

Fresh walrus ivory carving by Anders Apassingok Junior (Saint Lawrence Island Yupik). Hand carved from locally, subsistance harvested walrus. Anders learned to carve from the elders who in turn learned from generations of elders passing the art down. Each piece is carved from a tusk that is cured for several weeks and is unique in color and pattern. Fresh ivory is legal for use by all Alaska Native artisans.
