Description

Cruise Alaska aboard the Steamer Northwestern and discover what it was like to travel to Alaska in the early 1900s.

“There is a subtle illusive, intangible something that grips the heart of the visitor to Alaska.”

Bertha Adele Penny’s delightful story of her journey to Alaska was first shared with her friends and family a century ago. Told in the voice of turn-of-the-century America and full of humor as well as poignant beauty, she shared her personal experience aboard the Steamer Northwestern. She traveled with a group of America’s writers and editors as they visited Alaska’s cities, glaciers, mines and farmlands at the end of the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition of 1909.

Her original story was shared decades later with Constance Taylor in 1977, but it remained in a box of treasures for 42 years. When Constance rediscovered it in 2019, she knew it needed to be published. Bertha’s account of the 1909 trip comes to life with vintage photographs, newspaper clippings, and an appendix of articles written by others who shared the grand adventure.

Fathom Publishing Company

Fathom Publishing Company

Fathom's goal is to publish quickly while paying careful attention to what is special about each book. We give personal attention to our authors and aim to make them proud to show off their publications. Early Years, Alaskana Connie Taylor formed Fathom Publishing Company in 1981 to publish books about Cordova, Alaska. Our first books were Cordova Fire Chief Dewey Whetsell's And the Fire's Not Green and Rose Arvidson's Cordova The First 75 Years. Next followed a coloring book by Cordova artist Mike Anderson, Coloring Alaska's Cordova. Nancy Ross and Mike Anderson collaborated on Cordova's Historic Buildings which included pen and ink drawings of old Cordova buildings and their history.

Chilkoot Lake Bike & Paddle

Combine two outstanding activities on a 12-mile bike ride along a glacially carved fjord followed by kayaking across Chilkoot Lake! Head out from Haines by bicycle on a winding, paved road on the shores of the Lutak Inlet and take in the dramatic view of the fjord waters where whales, seals, and sea lions can be seen. We'll continue up the Chilkoot River, following the path of the spawning salmon where brown bears are frequently seen. From here, we’ll enjoy a picnic lunch. After lunch, we'll get fitted for our kayak portion of the tour. We'll kayak the emerald waters of the vast lake which is uncrowded and surrounded by breathtaking views. Waterfalls tumble from thousands of feet above, and the lush green forest touches the shoreline. We’ll end the tour by driving back into town. After a quick drive through the small town of Haines, we’ll drop you at the ferry dock.
