Description

In the 3rd book of the Northern Narratives series, Tall Tales of Alaska Sitka, AK: Where Cultures, Customs, and Countries Collided, you’ll journey to the western edge of the Inside Passage to Sitka, Alaska, where the tides of history crashed ashore, leaving their indelible mark.

You’ll be immersed in the layered past of a city that has been both rugged and regal, both Russian and American, and has always been Alaskan. You’ll witness the first encounters between the Tlingit people and the Russian settlers, stand at the cross roads of an empire’s rise and fall, and experience the pivotal moment when Alaska became part of the United States.

But the journey doesn’t stop there. These tales will then sweep you away to modern-day Sitka, where history intertwines with the present. Explore Sitka Sound’s sunken ships, relive the final eruption of the Sound’s resident volcano, and visit the town’s cherished animal sanctuaries: The Raptor Center and the Fortress of the Bear.

And just like before, Northern Narratives doesn’t require you to be a historian to enjoy our stories. But the past is impossible to ignore in Sitka. It is visible in the buildings that line its streets and etched into the totem poles that populate its parks, and Tall Tales of Alaska Sitka, AK brings this history to life—one unforgettable tale at a time.

Read about:

• The Battle of 1804 and other significant skirmishes

• Influential Russian vessels like the Neva

• Alaska trading hands and the Treaty of Cession

• The Raptor Center and The Fortress of the Bear

• The importance of Mount Edgecumbe

• How to read the tales told on a Totem Pole

Fathom Publishing Company

Fathom's goal is to publish quickly while paying careful attention to what is special about each book. We give personal attention to our authors and aim to make them proud to show off their publications. Early Years, Alaskana Connie Taylor formed Fathom Publishing Company in 1981 to publish books about Cordova, Alaska. Our first books were Cordova Fire Chief Dewey Whetsell's And the Fire's Not Green and Rose Arvidson's Cordova The First 75 Years. Next followed a coloring book by Cordova artist Mike Anderson, Coloring Alaska's Cordova. Nancy Ross and Mike Anderson collaborated on Cordova's Historic Buildings which included pen and ink drawings of old Cordova buildings and their history.
