What To Expect

*Duration: 3 hours

About Us

The Squid Acres Kennel is devoted to the quality care and enjoyment of our sled dogs. If the dogs aren't having fun ... we don't have fun. Over the past few years, we have been building our kennel with a variety of dogs and pups from reputable racing kennels, a handful of dogs from the Fairbanks Animal Shelter, and in the past, we have also helped the second chance league by fostering a dog when we can give a little extra attention.

For the past 10 years, we have been running some mid-distance races with some nice finishes in races such as Gin Gin 200, Chatanika 200, Yukon Quest 300, and Copper Basin 300. The plan for the 2022 season is for 2 teams to run as many mid-distance races as possible and one team in the 1000 mile Yukon Quest and Iditarod races.

Squid Acres Kennel offers a variety of dog mushing activities for a variety of experience levels. We have two locations to choose from. Most of our tours begin from our Cantwell location, on the picturesque Denali Highway. Our second location is at the Old Susitna Lodge, Mile Post 77 on the Denali Highway. Whether you are interested in a kennel visit to meet the dogs, going for your first dogsled ride, learning to run your own team, going on a guided multi-day adventure, or interested in dog team support on your human-powered expedition, Squid Acres has got you covered.

Cancellation Policy

Customers will receive a full refund or credit with 72 hours' notice of cancellation. Customers will also receive a full refund or credit in case of operator cancellation due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances. No-shows will be charged the full price. No refunds for arriving more than 1/2 hour late. We strongly recommend that you get travel insurance before your trip to cover unexpected last-minute cancellations.

Inclement Weather Cancellations:

Summer: We reserve the right to shorten or cancel the dog run portion of the tour due to hot temperatures for the safety of the dogs. Tours will not be stopped due to cold or rainy weather. Please bring rain gear and clothing appropriate for weather conditions. A partial refund may be given if the tour must be shortened due to warm temperatures.

Winter: Tours will be canceled if road conditions are unsafe for travel of our vehicles or if temperatures are colder than -20 degrees Fahrenheit. Cancellations due to weather will be fully refunded.

Using photos and video Caitlin will take you through the intensive process of preparing for, and ultimately racing, the longest sled dog race in the world: The Iditarod! Spanning over 1,000 miles, the race is a true testament to the character, will, and spirit that embodies what it means to be an Alaskan. The Tail End You will be given ample time for questions, a chance to peruse our gift shop, and of course, the opportunity to visit with our puppies before you head out on your next adventure. We pride ourselves on being the hardest place to leave, and promise that your journey with us will last well beyond your visit. “People have historically travelled to Alaska looking for gold. But life has taught me that the value of gold pales in comparison to the only commodity truly worth anything: TIME! And there is nothing I want to do more with my time, than to share it with you, our guests.” -Mike Santos

Beginner's Snowshoeing Adventure

HIGHLIGHTS: • Experience an intro to snowshoeing at the Anchorage's Glen Alps! • Perfect for solo travelers, couples, and families with older children. • Enjoy breathtaking views of the Anchorage Bowl and Cook Inlet. • Learn about Alaska's alpine spruce forests narrated by skilled naturalists. • Opportunity for wildlife sightings, including moose, hares, lynx, and birds! • Provisions include a granola bar, and snowshoes of course! Have you have ever wanted to try snowshoeing, or just a new winter activity, but didn't know where to start? Look no further! Snowshoeing is an activity which allows you to travel easily through snow-packed terrain with the use of oversized "shoes" that keep you floating on the surface of the snow. This introductory-level tour takes us into the mountainous wonderland of the Glen Alps, located in the Chugach mountains just to the east of Anchorage. After a quick introduction on using a snowshoe, we'll walk around until you get comfortable with them. Walking in snowshoes is easy; you should feel comfortable quickly. Our circuit takes us just over two miles through snow-covered hemlocks and alpine meadows. Opportunity for photography and wildlife viewing flourishes within the magnificent South Fork Campbell Creek valley. We could see small mammals, birds, or even a moose! The Glen Alps is without-a-doubt one of those places that everyone needs to visit at least once during their stay in Alaska. Experience it with us in this one-of-a-kind-way, today! Please Note: Our guides are avalanche safety certified, ensuring your well-being while providing education on how to carefully travel in hazardous environments. If there is not enough snow accumulation to go snowshoeing, we will go winter hiking, or you can opt for a full refund. This is to be determined by the morning of your tour. Experience Suggestions: No experience required but understand that snowshoeing is more arduous of an activity than hiking. You should be able to walk at least 3 miles on flat pavement, or 2.5 miles of uneven rolling terrain over the course of 2 hours. You should also be able to balance well and feel comfortable walking in snowy conditions. Some parts of the trail are steep and hilly, placing additional stress on areas of the body not impacted by level terrain. Not recommended for those with cardiac or respiratory issues/illness. May be difficult for those with joint issues.
