About the artist

Hello! I'm Cayla, the creator and owner, based in Sitka, AK. I am Lingít and belong to the Dakl'aweidí tribe of Angoon. I worked several jobs in the service industry before I began playing around with macrame in 2017. Over the last several years I have learned that my hope for this work is to come alongside people in my community to help integrate more of the arts into our mental health work locally and statewide. While I spend a fair chunk of my time creating, I also aspire to work within the community to grow connections and accessibility to diverse forms of healing.

Emerald Lake + Tushi Dog mushing camp

This tour combines the ever popular Emerald Lake tour with a visit to Michelle Phillips and Ed Hopkins Tutshi Sled Dog Mushing Camp, where you’ll meet Michelle and her husband Ed, and their dogs. Michelle and Ed are veteran Iditarod and Yukon Quest mushers, and summer camp is an essential part of training for the dogs, keeping them fit and socialized. Pet the sled dog puppies and/or enjoy a 1.3 mile dog cart ride on a wilderness trail. Mushers shares their stories of life on the trail during a 10-minute talk after your ride. A visit to Michelle Phillip’s “Tutshi Dog Mushing Camp”, where you’ll meet Michelle and her husband Ed, and their dogs. Michelle races in the Iditarod each spring, mushing 16 of her 60 dogs from Anchorage to Nome in the famous 1,000-mile race. 2018 will be her 12th year! Pet her sled dog puppies (included in the tour cost) and/or enjoy a 15-minute dog cart ride on a wilderness trail, (Prepay for cart rides at the time of booking for $35/Adult and $25/Child). She shares her stories of life on the trail during a 10-minute talk after your ride. If visiting Emerald Lake is a priority for you on your tour, let your guide know, so they can time it out right! If Petting the Pups and a Dog Cart Ride is your priority, and you want less driving time, then you'll turn around at the Yukon Sign, making yours a five-hour tour. You pick! The cart ride experience is not included in the price of this tour, but is an optional add on. Decide on the day of your tour if you'd like to add this adventure! Dog cart rides are $68 per adult, or $58 per child in CAD. These activities are paid at the door! *Sample Itinerary: 9:30 AM: Meet the Beyond Skagway Tours representative, who will be wearing a blue coat and holding a “Beyond Skagway” sign, at the end of your ship’s pier, just past port security. Head North, through Skagway. Listen, while your guide weaves the story of the Klondike Gold Rush of ’98. View notable historical buildings and hot spots to visit after your tour. Cruise over White Pass, passing by many scenic viewpoints. 10:30 AM: Canadian Customs; be prepared with your PASSPORTS handy! Continuing north, scan for wildlife and pass by or stop at these scenic points for photos! 11:00 AM: Stop At Michelle Phillip’s summer dog mushing camp Most groups allow 30-60 minutes at dog camp. You will want to play with the pups, watch the video about mushing, and maybe even take a dog cart ride! Don’t expect any snow on the group in the summertime, however! 12:00 PM: Head north on the S. Klondike Highway, stopping at or passing by even more scenic viewpoints. 12:45 PM: Carcross for lunch ( not included in price ) Enjoy lunch at one of two vendors in town or ask us about a picnic lunch! It can allow for more time on the road if you order a picnic lunch from Skagway, and eat lunch at dog camp! 2:30 PM: Head south on the same highway, enjoying a completely different view as you now watch the snowy and heavily glaciated north faces of the White Pass mountains slowly unfold before you. 4:30 PM: Arrive back in Skagway, in town, or at your ship!
