In terms of soap, who thinks of Medieval with clean smelling soap, I mean, truthfully? I know I didn't, but as I thought on it more, I realized that this was a time of huge innovation and strides. Yes, they didn't have the technology that we do, but they were notating music and creating beautiful art and culture from what we might consider limitations. I found a wonderful fragrance that embodied this with layered notes: the top of mint, chamomile; the middle of hay, beeswax, grassy, herbal; and the bottom of oak, cinnamon. To complement these rich and earthy textures, I wanted to create something that was bold and also showed growth toward the future. I chose a deep blue and added activated charcoal to give depth and durability, and then throughout, I layered maya gold mica for elegance and shine, representing those independent lines of polyphony beginning to emerge from the solid monophonic structure. The bars are rough-hewn, but the raw or unfinished looking pockets reveal the hidden treasure of the gold and the beauty unfurling.
The Medieval time period (1150-1400) was all about monophony, or music that had a single, unaccompanied melodic line.. Much of the music of the time was sacred, or written for the church. As the the time period progressed though, there began an exploration of adding more voices, or polyphony. However, this is not what you would consider the harmony of current music. These were independent lines of music working together in a piece, but considered individual of each other in melody and rhythm.
