Here, time is measured in seasons, not months. Our grocery store is the forest, from the vegetation that grows within to the the things that roam amongst it all, where getting food involves equal amounts of strenuous effort mixed with luck. Home is a rustic, four-walled cabin on the edge of the tundra that is invisible except to the few who know its exact location. For heat, we use a little barrel stove shoveled with wood, which is said to warm you up twice: once when you cut and split it, and again when you burn it. We do have running water, but only in the summer before the river freezes to solid ice! Every outing can turn disastrous and one miscalculation can mean death, yet this is our chosen way. This epic collection of short stories from life deep in Alaska's remote eastern interior shows what it's like to truly survive. Each chapter tells an adventurous tale of hunting, fishing, trapping, and day-to-day life as we overcome hardships and thrive in a lifestyle that most people in today's civilized world can't even imagine. Here, there are no modern conveniences to ease life; each day is a battle against the elements while we hunt elusive creatures and fish for food, trap fur in extreme subzero temperatures, and tackle some of Alaska's harshest and most rugged terrain. Inspired by the things I am blessed to see every day living in remote eastern interior Alaska, the forest provides all the materials and ideas that I am lucky to share with you. I started carving out of curiosity and ended up being pretty good at it and loved it! Eventually, I experimented outward and started dabbling in jewelry making, painting, etc. just for fun, but people who saw my work often asked, "Are you selling these? I want to buy!" So, I finally took the leap and turned my hobby into a business in the hopes that the rest of the world will find a unique treasure in what I love to do. My work is permited for the "Made in Alaska" program and offering products that are certified 100% Alaskan made items!
