About the Brand: Alaska Beeswax Wraps
We are the Hankins Family: William, Amy, Lucy, Nathan, and our doodle Finnea.
We live in Seward, Alaska, and work in the commercial fishing industry. Seward is a small seaside town located on the shores of Resurrection Bay. Our children, Lucy and Nathan, are third-generation fishers! We love all things outdoors, such as hiking, backpacking, hunting, fishing, boating, berry picking, and adventuring to new places. Alaska is an outdoor family's dream.
In March, during COVID "Shelter-in-place", we started making beeswax wraps for fun. Soon a fun craft became a small business as friends began to purchase our wraps: the rest is history.
As a quilter, I always loved the beautiful designs of batik fabrics and knew right away that batiks would make the best wraps due to their durability. Most fabrics are printed, but not batiks. Batiks are hand-made using a wax-resist dye technique that originated in Java, Indonesia.
Because batiks are dyed, they are beautiful on both sides.
Our wraps are made in small batches at home. Because we're a family business, we all take part in the process, I cut and wax the fabric, our daughter Lucy packages the sets, and our son Nathan cuts and folds the labels.
We love using wax wraps because we care about our oceans and the planet that will be left for generations to come. We use far less plastic and that is a win-win for all of us! I hope you'll love using wax wraps as much as we do.
