Kone Kompany

Our Story: In Skagway, Alaska, the Kone Kompany is the first stop for sweet souvenirs. The goal of our family owned business is to provide both a superior customer experience, fun and tremendous value for our customers. Who We Are: Owners Duff and Karla Ray moved to Skagway, Alaska in 1979 as a young married couple with a two year old daughter. Over the next 40 years, they added another daughter and have enjoyed the adventures Alaska has to offer. They have become business owners and are well known for their love of people and the opportunity to serve and work in a town small enough- that everybody knows your name! With family and faith as cornerstones, the Rays are passionate about community, and providing a workplace where staff are engaged and valued. In 1982 they were given an opportunity to buy a Laundromat and Dry cleaners in Downtown Skagway. The Kone Kompany, featuring Dreyers ice cream, homemade fudge, and candy, soon followed. The laundromat turned into a gift store, Kothes Rush Outfitters, where locals and tourists alike could find apparel, necessities, and souvenirs. Noticing a need for high quality outdoor clothing and gear, they began carrying brands like the North Face and Helly Hansen in a small section of their store which moved into its own space named Duffs Backcountry Outfitters. It became a local and visitor favorite when the growth and success of the store allowed a new look, logo, and location on 5th avenue next to Grizzlys RadioShack – another store owned by the Rays. We welcome you to visit our family stores and say Hi! Mission of Kone Kompany: Our goal is to provide to the visitors and locals in Skagway, a place to find sweet treats in a friendly atmosphere, you’ll love to return to, time and again. We look forward to giving you a sample of our homemade fudge or whipping up one of our specialty milkshakes. You will enjoy the wide selection of Made in the USA candies, unsurpassed for freshness and variety. We strive for the highest level of customer service, encourage our staff to get to know the customers and add to the visitor experience in Alaska.

Chilkat Photography Tour- Departs from Skagway

Escape the crowds of Skagway and focus on photographing the stunning scenery of the Chilkat Valley. Cradled at the base of the Chilkat Peninsula, flanked by the Lynn Fjord and Chilkat River, Haines is filled with natural wonders. Your expert photography guide will assist you in capturing the best of the Chilkat Valley’s unique attractions. From Skagway, the trip begins with a 45-minute ferry ride along the steep-walled fjords connecting Skagway to Haines. Over a dozen unnamed waterfalls drop hundreds of feet from the cliff sides on both sides of the boat. Marvel at the scenery and look for humpback whales, harbor seals, and bald eagles. Arrive in Haines, and meet your professional photography guide. Your guide will select his favorite locations and provide you with ample time to set up the best shots. Depending on the lighting and weather, different locations in the Chilkat Valley boast specific photographic highlights. May, June, and July feature wildflowers and eagles. Beginning in August, pink salmon—the smallest and most abundant of the Pacific salmon varieties—begin their run up the Chilkoot River to spawn. This is the best opportunity to see brown bear as they are often witnessed feeding along the banks of the river. When bears are present, every effort will be made to give you safe bear viewing and photography. The theme is flexibility, fun and learning rather than adherence to a rigid schedule. Even a simple point-and-shoot camera will work. But by all means, bring all your photo gear. The tour includes a boxed lunch so that you can eat when you want to and focus on getting the shots that you desire. You’ll return to Skagway via shuttle catamaran.

Cruise Ship Tour and Transfer: Whittier to Anchorage

The smarter way to travel from Whittier Cruise Ship Terminal to Anchorage! This full day tour from Whittier includes a local guide, an aerial tram ride up Mt. Alyeska, a tour of the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, lunch at a local eatery, a drive down Portage Valley and through the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel, drop off in Anchorage, and scenic photo-stops along the way! Following your pick up at the Whittier Cruise Ship Terminal, sit back with your luggage secured in our comfortable and clean sprinter vans as your Alaskan driver guides you northbound on the Seward Highway! Travel 2.5 miles through the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel, the longest highway tunnel in North America! Travel Drive up Portage Valley* for views of several Alpine glaciers! Next, visit the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, a 200-acre natural habitat that provides wildlife education and rehabilitation for some of Alaska’s favorite animals! This is Alaska’s only guaranteed wildlife viewing! Get close enough to observe and photograph some of our favorite land animals such as moose, reindeer, bison, wolves, and more! While we cannot guarantee bears due to the size of their habitat, however, it is common to see both brown and black bears at the Conservation Center! Make sure to take photos of wildlife with the amazing backdrop of the Chugach Mountains and Turnagain Arm! Visit to the quaint town of Girdwood and a favorite local eatery for lunch (provided). After lunch ascends up the side of Mt. Alyeska on an aerial tram. From the top (weather permitting) take in views of several glaciers and the upper reaches of a temperate rainforest. Continue along the Turnagain Arm, an All-American Road, and National Scenic Byway. Look out for alpine scenery, hanging glaciers, and potential wildlife! Upon arrival in Anchorage, you’ll be transferred directly to the Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport where you will be helped with off-loading your luggage, or you may be dropped off at your Anchorage hotel! Complimentary snacks and water are provided throughout your tour.
