Cradled at the base of the Chilkat Peninsula, flanked by the Lynn Fjord and Chilkat River, Haines is filled with natural wonders. Your expert photography guide will assist you in capturing the best of the Chilkat Valley’s unique attractions.
From Skagway, the trip begins with a 45-minute ferry ride along the steep-walled fjords connecting Skagway to Haines. Over a dozen unnamed waterfalls drop hundreds of feet from the cliff sides on both sides of the boat. Marvel at the scenery and look for humpback whales, harbor seals, and bald eagles.
Arrive in Haines, and meet your professional photography guide. Your guide will select his favorite locations and provide you with ample time to set up the best shots. Depending on the lighting and weather, different locations in the Chilkat Valley boast specific photographic highlights. May, June, and July feature wildflowers and eagles. Beginning in August, pink salmon—the smallest and most abundant of the Pacific salmon varieties—begin their run up the Chilkoot River to spawn. This is the best opportunity to see brown bear as they are often witnessed feeding along the banks of the river. When bears are present, every effort will be made to give you safe bear viewing and photography.
The theme is flexibility, fun and learning rather than adherence to a rigid schedule. Even a simple point-and-shoot camera will work. But by all means, bring all your photo gear. *Your tour includes a deli-style lunch. It consists of a turkey sandwich on organic whole wheat bread, fruit, freshly baked cookie, and bottled water. Vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options are available with 48 hours of advance notice.
About Us
We are committed to providing an unforgettable experience and superior service for each and every one of our guests. Our staff and guides are knowledgeable about the natural and human history of our area and offer great customer service. Our small groups provide experiences and visit locations that big bus tours cannot. Our largest vehicle holds 14 guests yet averages 6. Our tour minimum is just 2 guests so, if you are the only couple signed up, your tour won’t cancel!
We are Haines and Skagway specialists. We compose our team primarily of local hires. Since we live here, we strive to be good community members. Many of our tours involve partnerships with other Haines businesses. We consider the effects of our tours on the local environment that we call home.
We’ve approached tourism in a sustainable manner since the 1980s. We recycle at the office, donate to local environmental projects and make sure our money stays in the local community.
About the owner
Joe arrived in Haines in 1986 working as a naturalist aboard a small, eighty-passenger expedition ship. Haines captured Joe’s heart and imagination, and he moved here in 1987 to manage and guide for a local rafting company. Joe founded Rainbow Glacier Adventures in 1992. The first tours RGA offered featured small group visits to local artists’ homes. Since that time, the company and variety of tours has grown but the concept of local guides and high-quality, educational tours remains. While Joe spends much of his time running the organization, he particularly enjoys guiding private photography tours and special charters. Joe enjoys backcountry skiing, international travel, photography, and, above all, spending time with his wife, Edie, and daughters, Stella Angelina and Sapphire Marie.
Cancellation Policy
If you cancel more than seven days prior to the tour, you are entitled to a full refund. If you cancel seven days to 24 hours prior, you receive a 50% refund. With less than 24 hours notice, there will be no refund.

Historic Gold Rush Scenic Drive Tour
Your tour begins at the pier where you’ll meet your knowledgeable guide. Your small, intimate group will board a van and drive through Skagway’s historic district and residential district en route to the backcountry and the gold rush-era town of Dyea. On this excursion in Skagway, hear tales about Skagway’s time as a gold rush boom town as your guide points out some of its historic buildings. Driving through Skagway’s residential district you’ll learn all kinds of interesting facts about this wonderful town. Once out of town, your tour leads over a mountain road to what was once the gold rush city of Dyea. Along the way, you’ll stop at the Naku Bay overlook and peer down the inside passage – North America’s longest and deepest fjord. Next, head to the trailhead of the Chilkoot Trail. This world-famous trail was the main route to the riches of the Klondike during the gold rush over 100 years ago. Now a tranquil place of incredible beauty, the trail winds through a lush rainforest alive with birds, animals, and wildflowers. Yukon Tour (Early and late season only)
This incredible scenic drive is always an option even when many things are closed down or not yet open for the season. It is my pleasure to offer a beautiful tour at the extremes of the season. The early spring will likely have snow in sections of this drive and the late season will have gorgeous fall colors! Once we have picked everyone up from our central meeting point, we will tour through the historic district in Skagway. Then we will make our way out of town up the summit pass. At the top of the summit, we will reach British Columbia, Canada. Then we will tour through a weather-worn dwarfed forest called the Tormented Valley. Here we will take in the scenery and enjoy this strange, but beautiful landscape. After the Tormented Valley, we will come to Boreal Forest and the lakes region of the tour. Through these two regions, we can stop, take pictures, and take in the changing scenery as we drive deeper into Canada. From here we will continue to the border of British Columbia and the Yukon and touch into a Canadian Territory that many never see. After this point, we will travel back on the same beautiful highway and return to Skagway where you can be dropped off in town.
Chilkoot Trail Hike, Float, and Summit Drive Tour
This excursion retraces the footsteps of the Klondike Gold Rush stampeeders over the historic Chilkoot Trail and float back down on the beautiful Taiya River. Tour the spectacular views of alpine lakes, towering snow-capped peaks, and pristine forest on a drive to the summit of the picturesque White Pass. Your excursion begins at the dock. After a safety orientation, board a van and drive through Skagway to the backcountry and the historic town of Dyea. Hike the first two miles of the scenic Chilkoot Trail, the centerpiece of gold rush history in Skagway. This world-famous trail was the main route to the riches of the Klondike during the gold rush. Now a tranquil place of incredible beauty, the trail winds through a lush rainforest alive with birds, animals, and wildflowers. Enjoy the exercise, fresh air, beautiful scenery, pristine forests, and history of a bygone era as the trail takes you up and over the 350' tall Saintly Hill. Along the way, your tour guide weaves an entertaining mix of natural history and Klondike folklore. Photo opportunities abound as you retrace the footsteps of the gold-hungry stampeders who forged this route over 100 years ago. Arrive at the banks of the Taiya River, where your 18-foot raft awaits for the scenic float (no whitewater) back to Dyea. The forest gives way to fields of beach greens and wild iris, and the granite walls of the fjords rise steeply to the snow-capped peaks and hanging glaciers. Enjoy a riverside snack of homemade cookies and a hot beverage with countless picture-perfect moments before loading up in the van and continuing the tour up to the White Pass summit. We’ll drive for about 45 minutes from the take-out to the top of the scenic White Pass. There are many photo opportunities of beautiful alpine lakes, glaciers, towering snowcapped peaks and pristine forests. After enjoying the spectacular scenery, we’ll return through the U.S. Border station and return to the town of Skagway. *Timings: (~10 minutes) - Your friendly guide will meet you near the Skagway Small Boat harbor sign and restrooms. Here they will take the opportunity to get to know you and provide answers to any questions that you might have about your upcoming excursion. (~35 minutes) - From the small boat harbor we’ll board a van and head toward Dyea and the Chilkoot Trail. Along the way, you’ll enjoy a driving town tour of Skagway and the scenic coastal gravel road to Dyea. (~120 minutes) - Once we arrive in Dyea, your guide will get you outfitted with trekking poles and you’ll have the opportunity to use the restroom before we begin tracing the Gold Rush stampeders’ steps along the first two miles of the Historic Chilkoot Trail. (~10 minutes) - At the end of the hike your guide will get you outfitted with a PFD and rubber boots and provide a safety briefing as we prepare for the scenic float down the Taiya River. (~35 minutes) - Sit back and enjoy as your experienced river guide rows you down the scenic Taiya River. The stable 18’ raft provides a great platform for photography and taking in the sweeping mountain, ocean, and rainforest views. (~15 minutes) - Once we reach the riverside raft take-out, you’ll be treated to a homemade cookie and hot cocoa, hot tea, and some free time to take in the dramatic landscape with the supplied spotting scope. (~85 minutes) - From the river take-out we’ll begin our drive north up the Klondike Highway to the dramatic summit of the White Pass. There will be many photo opportunities and we’ll stop at the “Welcome to Alaska” sign so that you can get pictures with the sign. (~60 minutes) - When we depart the summit the leisurely drive back to your ship will take about 45-60 minutes as we make a photo stop at Bridal Veil Falls and stop through US Customs.

Chilkoot Canoe Wildlife Safari Tour (Skagway Departure)
After meeting your tour representative in Skagway, you'll board a high speed catamaran for a 45 minute boat ride to the town of Haines. Upon arrival into Haines, we'll take a short tour of Fort Seward, a 30 minute drive from downtown Haines and then head up the Lutak Inlet to the Chilkoot River Valley. The Chilkoot corridor offers incredible wildlife viewing. Brown Bears, eagles, mountain goats, and spawning salmon are commons sights. Our guides are expert naturalists and enjoy sharing their love and knowledge of the Alaskan wilderness. Once at the Lake, we’ll head out onto Chilkoot Lake in stable motor assisted Voyageur Canoes. Our Canoes are built using similar dimensions as the canoes used by trappers and gold miners at the turn of the century. Powered by either paddle or motor, this tour offers guests the opportunity to paddle in the serenity of Chilkoot Lake, while also having the advantage of relaxing and taking photographs when it’s time to take a break from paddling. We’ll be out on the water for about 2 hours and explore the inlets, coves, salmon spawning streams and numerous waterfalls that spill off of the mountains into the lake. After enjoying the beautiful views on the lake, we’ll return to Haines and serve a picnic-style lunch at a private ocean beach location. Following lunch, we'll load up back onto the fast ferry for the return trip to Skagway. * Timings: (~75 minutes) Your friendly dock representative will meet you near the Skagway Small Boat harbor sign and restrooms. We will provide answers to any questions that you might have about your upcoming excursion and get you ready to board the ferry to Haines. We’ll help you board the comfortable ferry for the 50-minute narrated, scenic journey to Haines. (~60 minutes) Upon arrival in Haines, restrooms will be available and you’ll meet your guide and driver. From here we’ll depart for an interpretive drive through historic Fort Seward and continue to Chilkoot Lake. Along the way, we’ll drive along the shoreline of the Lynn Fjord and the wildlife-rich Chilkoot River. (~15 minutes) When we arrive at Chilkoot Lake you’ll have the opportunity to meet your other guides and take in the stunning views of the pristine lake. Your guides will help you get fit with a PFD (life jacket), rubber boots and canoe paddle. You’ll then receive a thorough safety briefing and orientation before boarding the 31’ long voyageur canoe for your adventure. (~90 minutes) – We’ll spend the next hour and a half experiencing Chilkoot Lake while our stable voyageur canoes. It is an excellent way to take in the fantastic views by water and if the wind picks up or you’re ready to relax, we will use the quiet 4-stroke motor to move around. (~15 minutes) – Once back at the put-in we’ll trade your rubber boots and PFD’s back in for your shoes and you’ll have time to enjoy our private deck and spotting scopes to take in the views of the lake and surrounding mountains and waterfalls one more time. (~40 minutes) We’ll then board our transportation and head down to the ocean for lunch. (~30 minutes) At our private ocean side picnic area, you’ll enjoy a picnic-style lunch provides great views of the Lynn Fjord in a private setting. (~50 minutes) Once we wrap up with lunch we’ll head over to the ferry dock where you’ll have the opportunity to use the restrooms and take additional photos of Haines before enjoying the scenic ride back up the fjord to Skagway. (~15 minutes) Upon returning to Skagway, a short walk will bring you back to our original meeting point, just a few minutes walk or shuttle to downtown Skagway and all three cruise ship docks.

This 15 minute ride is fully guided on a side-by-side and guide. Includes Tale of the Trail talk. -($36 per adult, $32 per kid) Our homestyle BBQ chicken is prepared fresh daily for a serving time of 11:30 to 2:00 by our chef Dexter. About the Show For nearly 100 years The Days of '98 Show has been dazzling audiences with music, laughter, and the legendary CAN CAN! Experience a day in the life of Jefferson "Soapy" Smith, Alaska's most notorious outlaw, who reigned during the wildest days of Skagway during the 1898 Klondike Gold Rush. This colorful vaudevillian musical brings you into the "Skaguay" of 1898 with the thrills and frills of the dancehalls and the chills felt by gold rush stampeders along the trail of '98. This show has been a Skagway tradition for cruise ship, bus, and RV visitors for over 100 years and is an iconic performance and a "must see" while in Skagway. Who Was Soapy Smith? November 2, 1860 - July 8, 1898 All of the events depicted in this original play are taken from the Skagway historical record and center on Soapy Smith's reign over the town during the Klondike Gold Rush of 1897 and 1898. Jefferson Randolph Smith was born in Georgia in 1860 and ventured west as a young man. He learned his trade as a con man during the silver and gold rushes of Colorado and eventually made it to Skagway in the fall of 1897. Here, he and Colorado cohort "Rev." John Bowers assembled what was reputed to be the largest band of thieves in North America. Skagway was described by Canadian Mountie Sam Steele as "a little better than hell on earth," and Smith's gang reigned supreme for nine months. Smith had a wife and family in St. Louis but he befriended Miss Belle Davenport and her "soiled doves," Alice and Mollie in Seattle before heading North. While his men did most of the dirty work, Soapy tried to establish himself as a solid citizen of Skagway. He contributed to the building of Skagway's first church and founded an "Adopt a Dog" program. City surveyor Frank Reid and others saw through Smith's good deeds and tried to run the con man and his gang out of town, but Smith was able to rally much of the business community around him. Soapy was riding high on July 4, 1898, as he rode his white horse up Broadway and then stood on the platform with the Governor of Alaska. Four days later he was dead man. His gang robbed a Nanaimo, British Columbia stampeder named J.D. Stewart of $2,800 in gold dust. Smith stood by his troops and refused to give the gold back. Reid's vigilante Committee of 101 gathered at the Juneau Co. Wharf as there was no hall in Skagway big enough to contain the mob. Most of Smith's men ran for the hills, but Soapy grabbed his Winchester and headed for the wharf to break up the meeting. You'll witness the events leading up to this historic moment. In 1923, Princess steamships started bringing tourists to Skagway. The local residents decided to put on a show for them to raise money for their local hockey team. The team needed new uniforms to compete in the White Pass Athletic League against their rival team in Whitehorse, Yukon. The show became an instant tradition and has been running ever since.

Escape the crowds of Skagway and focus on photographing the stunning scenery of the Chilkat Valley. Cradled at the base of the Chilkat Peninsula, flanked by the Lynn Fjord and Chilkat River, Haines is filled with natural wonders. Your expert photography guide will assist you in capturing the best of the Chilkat Valley’s unique attractions. From Skagway, the trip begins with a 45-minute ferry ride along the steep-walled fjords connecting Skagway to Haines. Over a dozen unnamed waterfalls drop hundreds of feet from the cliff sides on both sides of the boat. Marvel at the scenery and look for humpback whales, harbor seals, and bald eagles. Arrive in Haines, and meet your professional photography guide. Your guide will select his favorite locations and provide you with ample time to set up the best shots. Depending on the lighting and weather, different locations in the Chilkat Valley boast specific photographic highlights. May, June, and July feature wildflowers and eagles. Beginning in August, pink salmon—the smallest and most abundant of the Pacific salmon varieties—begin their run up the Chilkoot River to spawn. This is the best opportunity to see brown bear as they are often witnessed feeding along the banks of the river. When bears are present, every effort will be made to give you safe bear viewing and photography. The theme is flexibility, fun and learning rather than adherence to a rigid schedule. Even a simple point-and-shoot camera will work. But by all means, bring all your photo gear. The tour includes a boxed lunch so that you can eat when you want to and focus on getting the shots that you desire. You’ll return to Skagway via shuttle catamaran.
