Description

The ulu is a traditional knife used by Alaskan Eskimos for the last 4,000 years! Originally, the blades were made of jade, slate or bone. This fine stainless steel blade should be treated as any other fine cutlery and washed by hand with warm soapy water and dried promptly.  This ulu is made from the natural bone that grows on the head of a caribou. Caribou shed their antler each fall to prepare for the coming winter and grow new, larger, antlers every spring.  Bob Merry, well-known Alaskan artist, collects shed antler to use in the making of these beautiful ulus, a true gift of Alaska.  Approx. Size: 5 1/2'' wide blade; comes with stand.

Skagway Sled Dog Discovery & Musher's Camp

Immerse yourself in the wondrous world of dog mushing! After the bus ride to camp, you will board our 4x4 military vehicle for a wild ride up the mountain where you will be greeted by mushers and several ecstatic Alaskan huskies! Then enjoy a summer sled ride on our custom-built sleds, where you will cruise through the forest, being towed by these professional athletes. After, learn about the history of dog mushing and soak up some puppy love before perusing our gift shop and returning to town. Your journey begins with an entertaining historic tour from your knowledgeable guide through downtown Skagway and along nine miles of stunning coastline to our Musher’s Camp™ in Dyea. Next, hop into our specialized Unimog for an exciting ride up our rugged mountain road, surrounded by glacially-fed streams and waterfalls. At the top, your musher will greet you with a custom-designed wheeled summertime sled and a team of very excited Alaskan Huskies! Feel the power of these strong dogs as they whisk you around a mile-long trail deep in the Tongass National Rainforest! After meeting your dog team, climb back into your Unimog and enjoy the adventurous ride to a breathtaking overlook of the Dyea tidal flats. Depending on the month you just might see eagles, bears, seals, horseback riders, wildflowers, and of course snow-capped mountains. Your Unimog will then bring you to what we like to call a “Kennel Talk.” We have been sharing our passion for dog sledding for years, and in that time, we have gathered up the most frequently asked questions about the sport. In the Kennel Talk, we will share the fascinating answers and welcome any additional questions you may have. Of course, we make sure you have plenty of time to play with our puppies! Your affection actually socializes these future athletes, which is essential to their racing success. A crackling fire and a unique gift shop round out your visit.
