Description

In the untamed wilderness of Alaska, where fortunes were made and lost overnight, a cast of unforgettable characters left their mark on the Last Frontier. This captivating collection of short stories and historical photographs brings to life the colorful personalities who shaped Alaska's history during the gold-rush era.

You’ll meet many folks from Alaska’s colorful past, including Swiftwater Bill Gates, the flamboyant prospector who struck it rich in the Klondike and became infamous for his extravagant spending, romantic exploits, and unscrupulous cons.

Then there is Diamond Tooth Lil, the dance hall girl who dazzled miners with her sparkling million-dollar smile; Fannie Quigly, the frontierswoman who learned to tame the wilds of Kantishna; and Jujiro Wada, who became known as Alaska’s Samurai musher.

This meticulously researched volume offers a fresh perspective on Alaska's gold rush years, bringing to light the untold stories of those who dared to dream big in the face of overwhelming odds. Whether you're a history buff, an adventure enthusiast, or simply curious about the characters who shaped the 49th state, this book provides an unvarnished look at the true spirit of Alaska.

"Laurel, your book is outstanding. I read a lot of books, but yours is the best I've read recently. Well done!"

Aunt Phil's Trunk Llc

My award-winning Aunt Phil's Trunk Alaska history series, which began in 2006, is well known for its captivating storytelling and hundreds of historical photographs. And while I originally wrote the books for history buffs, it turns out children love reading my books, too. Recently I created an Alaska studies curriculum after parents and teachers hounded me to do so. My print and online programs now are used by thousands of school children across Alaska to learn about the state we love. The Sourdough Cookery cookbook and 130-year-old sourdough starter (which originated in the gold fields of Hope, Alaska, in the 1890s with my great-grandfather) is popular around the globe, as well. (The cranberry chocolate cake recipe is one of our family favorites!) So, who am I? I'm a third-generation Alaskan who loves sharing the history of my incredible state though my books, sourdough starter, and historical presentations. And I've been blessed that Aunt Phil's Trunk has been given the Best in Anchorage Award for Education for the past several years.
