Salmon Shore Fishing

Offered by Chum Fun Charters  In Juneau, Alaska

About us

Come fishing with Chum Fun Salmon Charters, Juneau's only shoreside fishing adventure! Here in Juneau, we do a lot of our fishing from the docks and shorelines, not from boats. That's why we offer a local, hands-on fishing experience where our guests get to cast and reel instead of sitting in a boat without touching their rods!

Let us get you outfitted with the best gear including rods, reels, tackle, rain gear (rain tops, rain bottoms, and rainboots), and an Alaska fishing license if you need one. Our tour is three and a half hours and all-inclusive, beginning with a trip to the Macauley Salmon Hatchery where our guests will learn about the life cycles of a salmon, see the saltwater aquarium and explore the saltwater touch tanks. Then we will put our gear and knowledge to use and begin fishing at one of the best shoreside fishing locations around! All transportation is provided. In no time, you will be catching your own wild Alaska salmon! You may also see seals, sea lions, and eagles.

The tour is perfect for anyone from 7 to 87 years old, including individuals, groups, and families with kids, and it leaves you with plenty of time to reel in your catch and still enjoy everything that Juneau has to offer. Chum Fun Salmon Charters has local processors that will vacuum pack and ship salmon back home for our guests.

Meet The Owners:
Friendly, local guides Paul and Michelle own Chum Fun and Paul will be your fishing guide. Paul is a retired Bering Sea Crab fisherman. After 20 breathtaking and dangerous years at sea, he hung up his rain gear but he still loves to catch fish in the waters of Alaska. That's why he and his wife Michelle decided to open Chum Fun Salmon Charters! Michelle is of Athabascan and Russian Aleut and Alaska Native heritage. Alaska-born and raised, both Paul and Michelle's families have lived in Juneau for over 118 years. Chum Fun Salmon Charters is owned and operated by an Alaskan family with a rich tradition of living sustainably in the far north and catching the world's best salmon!

The Experience
Let us get you outfitted with the best gear including rods, reels, tackle, rain gear (rain tops, rain bottoms, and rainboots), and an Alaska fishing license if you need one. Begin with a trip to the Macauley Salmon Hatchery where our guests will learn about the life cycles of a salmon, see the saltwater aquarium and explore the saltwater touch tanks. Then we will put our gear and knowledge to use and begin fishing at one of the best shoreside fishing locations around! All transportation is provided. In no time, you will be catching your own wild Alaska salmon! You may also see seals, sea lions, and eagles.

Our first stop will be at the Macaulay Salmon Hatchery to take a tour and learn about the lifecycle of Alaska Salmon. The Macaulay tour is one of the highlights of our trip, including touch tanks that allow kids and parents alike to have close encounters with Juneau's marine life. After the tour, we will walk down to the dock and fish right at the mouth of the river. Our guides will provide training on how to reel, cast, and set a hook. Then it is up to you to land a gorgeous, Alaska salmon! You have two options. Either you can catch and release or get your fish professionally cleaned, packed, and shipped home through one of our local processing partners. Feel free to ask our guides for their favorite salmon recipes on the van ride back to downtown Juneau!

FAQs:
- What kind of fish will I catch?
Alaska salmon, wild and natural!
King salmon are available in May and June. Keta salmon are available in June and July. Pink salmon and Silver salmon are available in August and September. Visit our Wildlife page for additional information about Alaska's species of wild salmon.

- Can I take my fish home?
Ship your catch home! We can help you with arrangements.
Yes! There are several local seafood processing companies that will package your fish to arrive safely at your destination.

- Will I catch a "hatchery" fish?
Your catch, wild and natural!
You very well might! We bring clients to fish from shore or from the Douglas Island Pink and Chum (DIPAC) docks. DIPAC is a successful salmon hatchery raising salmon fry and then releasing them to mature in Alaska's glacier-fed oceans.

- What kind of fishing license do I need?
Got license, ready to fish! All legal-like.
You will most likely need a non-resident Alaska fishing license. You can pick it up and pay for it at our store, in cash. There is an ATM machine located in the lobby of our building.

- What kind of boat will I fish from?
Dock fishing, it's the best way to reel in the catch of the day!
We are a shoreside salmon fishing adventure, so you will be fishing from a local dock, not from a boat. This allows you to enjoy the experience of catching an Alaska salmon and still have time to enjoy other sights around Juneau during your visit.

- How many fish am I legally allowed to catch?
Fish for generations to enjoy Alaska's sustainable harvest!
Alaska salmon are managed for sustainability, and that means that harvest levels are closely watched during openings. There are often mid-season changes in catch regulations, and we will let you know what the legal limits are on the day of your adventure.

- Are Alaska salmon endangered?
Fish for generations to enjoy Alaska's economy depends on healthy salmon stocks!
No. It is written in Alaska's constitution that wild fish stocks must be sustainably managed. That's how important fish are to Alaska's heritage, economy, and Alaska's fishing families.
