Matanuska Glacier Walk - Anchorage Departure
Try our most popular tour! Take a hike on the Matanuska glacier, Alaska’s largest road-accessible glacier located two hours north of Anchorage. Journey two hours north of Anchorage and explore the Matanuska glacier’s many features, including ice caves, glacial blue meltwater pools, and sweeping views of this scenic valley. The Matanuska glacier is a frozen 27-mile river of ancient ice. Thousands of years old, this massive glacier is tucked at the head of the Matanuska valley. You will spend two hours trekking the ice with our expert guides, learning how the Matanuska glacier was born and how it shaped the surrounding landscape. Walking on ice is slippery fun, so we provide our guests with helmets, a trekking pole (walking stick), and microspikes that attach to your shoes. We require our guests to bring sturdy footwear (stiff-soled hiking boots or shoes) and suggest an extra pair of socks. Don’t be surprised if your shoes get covered with “flour,” the glacial till of finely-ground rock with a texture like talcum powder (it makes for great facials!). This tour does require walking on uneven surfaces for at least two hours, with stepping up and down required, so guests must be able-bodied. This all-inclusive tour allows you to warm up with hot beverages and a hearty lunch (provided) at a local lodge as well as complimentary snacks and water. Conclude your adventures with transportation back to your Anchorage hotel. Need additional outdoor winter gear for your tour? By request at the time of booking, Salmon Berry Tours can provide snow pants, boots, and gloves from our lending closet, if available. Special Notes: This is a “soft adventure” day trip experience. If interested in a more adventurous glacier tour, we would be happy to make recommendations for more strenuous glacier hiking or ice climbing. Glaciers present an inherently dangerous environment, and Matanuska glacier is no exception. Salmon Berry Tours has been in business since 2005, and we have been trekking on Matanuska glacier since 2011. We are fully insured for glacier trekking. The company never uses novice guides for our glacier trips, and we take our training very seriously. We operate in small groups, for additional safety, with one glacier guide for every six guests; guaranteeing two guides per tour. For more information about our guides, check out the About Us page, and read about the professional glacier guides on our team.

Salmon Berry Tours’ local Alaskan guide will showcase Anchorage’s rich green spaces, abundant history, and cultural connections for an immersive experience that teaches about the importance of Place. Beginning along the shores of Ship Creek, learn more about Anchorage’s memorable past and bright future. Port of Anchorage at Ship Creek Grandma Olga Ezi Bronze Arctic Art Installation Earthquake Park Lake Hood Chugach Mountains Scenic Overlook at Glen Alps Trailhead *ITINERARY Begin your historical tour from the heart of downtown, visiting the shores of Ship Creek, where Anchorage was born out of a desire for industry through a modest tent city. In June and July, you might be able to view Chinook salmon swimming upstream to spawn in the world’s only urban King salmon fishery. Here, we will walk to the bronze Arctic art installation honoring Grandma Olga Ezi, a Dena’ina First People matriarch who settled the Alaska Native village of Eklutna to the east. From Ship Creek, we will travel to the west end of Anchorage through Bootleggers Cove, stopping for a walk in Earthquake Park where in 1964, a 9.2 earthquake shook the city for almost five minutes and caused an upheaval of the silty shoreline and bluffs of town; the second-most powerful earthquake ever recorded. From the park, your guide will take a drive around Lake Hood, home to the world’s busiest seaplane airport and base. Finally, the tour van winds its way up the Hillside neighborhood of Anchorage toward a scenic overlook within the Chugach State Park system, our final stop. Weather permitting, guests have the opportunity to take panoramic photos of Anchorage, surrounding mountain ranges, and stunning Cook Inlet. While we can’t guarantee wildlife viewing during this tour through the City of Flowers & Lights, we are known for our big wildlife and it is not uncommon to see an occasional moose or bald eagle. Return downtown to explore the local shops and eateries or join us for an afternoon tour!
