What We Will Do
This is an excellent taste of what Anchorage is all about in the winter. Perfect for adventures, families, and those who want to get out and explore our winter wonderland. Fat tire biking will put a smile on your face and make you feel like a kid again!
Experience the fat bike phenomenon where it was born. Fat tire biking has become one of the most popular ways for locals and visitors to get out and play in the snow.
Anchorage boasts 150 miles of multi-use forested trails in the winter. This tour aims to show you the best of them. There are plenty of stops, stories, and photo opportunities along the way too, so don’t forget your camera!
Does your group have varying fitness levels? Upgrade to an electric-assisted fat bike and go faster and farther with friends and family. This is also a great solution for the other half who doesn’t own padded biking shorts.
The key to fat bike comfort is a warm head, feet, and hands. At Alaska Trail Guides, we provide pogies, hand warmers, and insulated overboots for these contact points, so you’ll be ready for miles of riding! Just come dressed in layers (non-cotton), like you are going out skiing.
The length of the trip may vary based on conditions.
If you think our mountain biking adventures in Alaska stop when winter sets in, you’re very much mistaken! The fun keeps rolling when the snow flies! The stars of the show in the snowy winter months are our fat tire bikes. Complete with studded tires, they are kitted out for an exciting and unforgettable experience.

* Skills Needed for Our Anchorage Fat Tire Biking Tours
- Beginner: I know how to ride a bike, shift gears, and use hand breaks. I can control my speed and direction on the pavement, however, I am new to mountain biking and have never ridden dirt trails or ridden off-road once or twice a year.
- Novice: I have some experience riding dirt trails or off-road terrain and have been mountain biking several times. I can control my bike speed and direction on smooth trails and moderately uneven terrain, but often walk my bike when things get rooty. I am able to anticipate the terrain and know when to shift gears some of the time.
- Intermediate: I have been mountain biking for at least 2 years and ride regularly. I am able to control my speed and direction on moderately steep and technical singletrack trails which may include tight trees, mud, loose rocks, and sand. I can roll over small obstacles but I don’t take my wheels off the ground. I can anticipate the terrain and know when to shift gears.
- Advanced: I am a strong rider who has been mountain biking for 5 or more years. I am comfortable climbing and descending steep, technical, and exposed terrain that includes rocks, tree roots, primitive trails, tight switchbacks, short drops, and jumps.
*Fitness Needed for Our Fat Tire Bike Tours in Anchorage
- Leisurely: My main source of exercise is walking or light workouts once or twice a week. I enjoy getting outside and walking or doing light activities. I prefer mostly flat or downhill terrain. Short, small hill climbs are doable, but less is ok with me. (Less than 200 feet of climbing)
- Recreational: Weekend warrior or commute to work or do spin classes in the gym, I enjoy an active lifestyle, working out 2 to 3 times a week with an occasional physical challenge. I enjoy gentle rolling terrain and feel great after reaching the top of a hill climb. (Less than 500 feet of climbing)
- Active: Fitness is central to my life. I ride my bike regularly weekly (spin classes count!) or I work out 4 to 5 times a week physically challenging myself with almost every workout. I enjoy hills and like getting some speed. (Less than 1,000 feet of climbing)
- Avid: Fitness is my life and everything I do revolves around my workouts and nutrition. I ride my bike an average of 100 miles per week and enjoy a fast pace for an extended time. I love to train, improve, and maybe even race my friends. I enjoy all-terrain!

*FAQs:
Q1. Will I see wildlife on the tour?
Alaska is an amazing place to see wildlife! We share our trails with moose, bears (brown and black depending on the trail), and bald eagles! We can’t guarantee wildlife, however, no matter if you choose a City Biking Tour or a Mountain Bike Tour, there is a 75% chance we will see a moose! Common wildlife spotted on our tours: moose, bears, bald eagles, snowshoe hares, ptarmigan, beluga whale, Dall Sheep, salmon, coyotes, and more!
Q2. Do I have to know how to ride a bike to go on a tour? What kind of rider do I have to be to go on one of your tours?
We require that you know how to ride a bike before arriving for your tour. Biking tours range from leisurely, flat, paved terrain to rides for advanced cyclists on and off-road. When making your reservation, we will ask about your biking ability to ensure you are choosing the best trip for you. Our guides are here to help you feel comfortable and reacquaint you with the equipment if it’s been a few years. We also have several different styles of bikes to match rider style and comfort level.
Q3. What if I get too tired and don’t want to bike the entire distance?
To ensure the most enjoyable experience, please read the skill and fitness level of the tour(s) you are interested in. If you have any questions about which tour is best for you and your group, give us a call! All our tours are designed around our beautiful Alaskan scenery. There are periodic stops for scenic overlooks perfect for pictures, changing layers, and having a quick snack.
Q4. What types of bikes do you use? Do you offer E-Bikes?
* Anchorage Greenbelt Bike Tour: Kona Dew hybrid bikes.
This bike has an aluminum frame to save weight and is built for a lifetime of smiles and comfort. This bike is designed for a day of exploring. (image on the left)
* Coastal Cruise Bike Tour: Specialized Roll Comfort Cruiser
which is a step-through frame that sits upright. Great for those with restricted mobility or who do not ride often. (image on the right)
* Chugach MTB Adventure and all Winter Tours: Rocky Mountain Fat Tire bikes for tours on dirt trails and for all winter tours. Fat tire bikes provide more cushion than a traditional hardtail mountain bike and, with 5-inch tires, are more stable. If a full-suspension bike is desired, one can be provided at an additional cost.
* Singletrack Sampler Private Tour: Rocky Mountain Thunderbolt full-suspension
*Other:

Q5. What is for lunch?
Box lunches are provided by a local cafe that uses locally sourced and organic ingredients. Lunch is included for full-day tours. During the booking process, you will be asked to select your lunch and provide any dietary restrictions we should be aware of.
Q6. How many people will be on tour?
- Citing Biking Tours: 2 to 8 people
- Mountain Biking Tours: 1 to 6 people
- Winter Biking Tours: 1 to 6 people
Q7. What is your minimum age requirement?
Our minimum age requirement varies by trip. Please see the trip details pages. If booking a private trip, we can accommodate any age. Note: we charge an additional fee for private trips. Please contact us for more details.
Q8. I’m traveling solo. Can I join an AKTG biking tour?
BOOK EARLY!
The more time we have to add other riders, the better! By contacting AKTG early, we have more time to pair you with other cyclists. If you’re the first to request a specific departure, we’ll make a reservation and attempt to add additional clients. To hold the tour, we require the minimum to be met, typically a 2-person minimum. If additional clients add to the tour, you will be refunded the difference. If no one else books, we will notify you five days prior, offering you dates and times of other trips that have met the minimum, giving you the chance to reschedule.
Q9. What should I wear?
Weather in Southcentral Alaska changes from day to day. We hope for warm, sunny days while being prepared for cool, rainy days. The weather and what you can expect will all change based on which trip you choose. Girdwood has a cooler climate as it is located in a temperate rainforest, whereas Anchorage is warmer and drier. Overall, the rules in Alaska are: do NOT wear cotton and always layer.
Wear clothing made of polyester, wool, fleece, nylon, polypropylene, and/or Capilene. The athletic types of clothing work well.
Q10. What is the weather like in Anchorage?
Protected by the Chugach Mountains and warmed by currents of the Pacific Ocean, Anchorage’s climate is mild. Summer temperatures here get into the low 70s. Between March 19 and September 23, Anchorage gets more hours of daily sunlight than anywhere in the other 49 states. Anchorage is near 61 degrees north latitude: about as far north as Stockholm, Sweden. Packing for a visit to Alaska can be summed up in one word: layers. Standing next to Exit Glacier in Seward, you may want a sweater or fleece. Then again, when you stop for lunch on a sun-soaked deck in Girdwood, you’ll want to be able to cool off in short sleeves or thinner materials. Just add or subtract layers as needed. The biggest factor is the wind, which can add a chill any day. A light windbreaker or rain jacket and rain pants can go a long way to provide warmth and comfort.

In June and July, you might be able to view Chinook salmon swimming upstream to spawn in the world’s only urban King salmon fishery. Here, we will walk to the bronze Arctic art installation honoring Grandma Olga Ezi, a Dena’ina First People matriarch who settled the Alaska Native village of Eklutna to the east. From Ship Creek, we will travel to the west end of Anchorage through Bootleggers Cove, stopping for a walk in Earthquake Park where in 1964, a 9.2 earthquake shook the city for almost five minutes and caused an upheaval of the silty shoreline and bluffs of town; the second-most powerful earthquake ever recorded. Finally, the tour van winds its way up the Hillside neighborhood of Anchorage toward a scenic overlook within the Chugach State Park system, our final stop. *Fitness Needed for Our Fat Tire Bike Tours in Anchorage - Leisurely: My main source of exercise is walking or light workouts once or twice a week. I enjoy getting outside and walking or doing light activities. I prefer mostly flat or downhill terrain. Short, small hill climbs are doable, but less is ok with me. (Less than 200 feet of climbing) - Recreational: Weekend warrior or commute to work or do spin classes in the gym, I enjoy an active lifestyle, working out 2 to 3 times a week with an occasional physical challenge. I enjoy gentle rolling terrain and feel great after reaching the top of a hill climb. (Less than 500 feet of climbing) - Active: Fitness is central to my life. I ride my bike regularly weekly (spin classes count!) or I work out 4 to 5 times a week physically challenging myself with almost every workout. I enjoy hills and like getting some speed. (Less than 1,000 feet of climbing) - Avid: Fitness is my life and everything I do revolves around my workouts and nutrition. I ride my bike an average of 100 miles per week and enjoy a fast pace for an extended time. I love to train, improve, and maybe even race my friends. I enjoy all-terrain!
