Our private campsite allows you to explore Ketchikan’s old growth forest and rocky beaches before and after your meal, giving you the chance to soak in the beauty of Alaska’s wilderness.
Our culinary adventures give you a taste of all we have to offer. Enjoy a genuine Alaskan tradition as you have your catch prepared for you by our chef on a wilderness beach, at sea, or at a private table at the Alaska Fish House.
1) Cook Your Catch: Wilderness Dining
Baranof Excursions has a remote campsite on a wilderness beach south of Ketchikan, ready for your arrival with your fresh-caught fish. Pull up with your guide in one of our boats, and step ashore to meet our campsite host. In just a few short minutes, we’ll quickly cook up a fresh bouillabaisse featuring your catch for you to enjoy in the comfort of a crackling beach fire, accompanied by beautiful views of the rainforest and the wild, rocky shoreline of our private beach.
2) Cook Your Catch: Private Dining At The Alaska Fish House
On arrival back to town, our guides will lay out your fish at our fish cleaning station and help you determine which fish you want to eat and how to prepare it to best meet your culinary desires. Once you’ve made your choice, we’ll run your fresh catch-up to our chefs in the Alaska Fish House. By the time, you’re done taking your raingear off, washing your hands, and getting back into your civilian clothes, we’ll have a private table ready for you in our rustic-style dining room, and an expertly prepared meal on its way. Once you’ve settled at your table, enjoy a cold, Alaskan-brewed Denali beer or a glass of wine to accompany your meal and give yourself the chance to relax into an authentic Southeast Alaskan dining experience. (If you'd like, we encourage you to invite your family members that you left in town, and share in your catch).
Be it maple-glazed salmon served on a bed of rice and locally-harvested sea asparagus, crab-stuffed halibut baked with finely sliced onions and garlic, battered and fried lingcod dipped in a homemade tartar sauce, or a pile of prawns grilled to perfection, you’ll find the locals eager to share the bounty of our oceans. And, trust us: there is nothing—and we mean nothing—that compares to the taste of fresh-caught fish prepared within just hours of the catch. Most of us will be quick to tell you there is no meal better than the meal you share with friends and family after a long day out fishing.
We doubt you’ll be surprised that here at Baranof Excursions we’re right in culinary step with any good Southeast Alaskan. With us, your fishing experience doesn’t stop after you’ve reeled in your catch. In our opinion, the ultimate denouement of your Alaskan fishing adventure is in savoring the fruits of your labor in an authentic Alaskan dining experience. We are experts and find enjoyment in taking your fresh fish, putting you in a unique environment, and opening the way for you to break bread with your friends and family.
What To Expect
*Duration: 5-6 hours
*Capacity: 6 people maximum (with options for larger groups)
*Additional $25.00 per person for a one-day fishing license
*We have the socks, boots, full rain gear, and watchman caps, just bring a sweater or light jacket for an extra layer
*FAQs:
- What is a skiff?
A skiff is an open boat that is propelled by an outboard motor. A skiff is a modern cousin to Vancouver's longboat or the Native Alaskan oceangoing canoe. We operate 20 ft. Raider skiffs equipped with Honda 90 HP outboard motors.
- How many passengers can each boat accommodate?
We like to ensure that all guests are as comfortable as possible when joining us for their fishing adventure. Therefore, we limit guests to 5 in each skiff, but the average is 4.
- What fishing and outfitting gear is provided?
Each guest is provided with Helly Hansen waterproof rain pants, a raincoat, a warm wool hat, wool socks, rubber boots, and gloves. You will be prepared for any weather (and you'll definitely want to have someone take a photo of you dressed in true Alaskan fashion!). We are proud to feature Penn rods on our excursions and a selection of rods that varies depending on the species of fish we are pursuing.
- How will we find your marina when you arrive?
If you are arriving in Ketchikan by cruise ship we will arrange for your guide to be waiting for you at the pier upon your arrival. Scan the crowd for the guy or gal in the guise of a fisherperson holding a sign with your name on it. Your guide will walk you to our marina. Depending on where your ship is docked the walk is 2-8 minutes. Upon arrival at the marina, your guide will lead you through the outfitting and licensing process. If you are not traveling aboard a cruise ship, you can find us at the end of Main Street at the "Alaska Fish House".
- I have a tendency to get seasick, will that be a problem?
We have been operating fishing tours for ten years, and we rarely have passengers that have to deal with seasickness, even those who are prone to motion sickness are comfortable on our boats. The boats which we operate have a low center of gravity, eliminating the rolling motion that usually generates a queasy stomach. However, if you do get sick there will be no extra charge.
- How long is the tour?
Our fishing trips are 4 to 6 hours. If you are arriving by cruise ship our downtown locations allow you to be out on the water quickly and maximize fishing time.
- What do I need to fish?
In order to fish, the State of Alaska requires you to purchase a one-day Alaska fishing license. The cost of a non-resident 1-day fishing license is $15.00. King salmon tags are an additional $10.00.
- Can you accommodate a special request? - I'd like to create a lifelong memory
Absolutely! You're fishing excursion with Baranof should be one of the most memorable excursions you do in Alaska, and that means we are there to make it happen. We can arrange for an amazing array of personal details, from a stop at a special beach or island to a search for specific wildlife or a particular bottle of wine to take with you. If you have a desire, share it with us and we will work to make it happen. When it comes to celebrations and events, we know that attention to small details makes it a perfect day.
* If you have any other questions, feel free to write us at [email protected] or use the chat feature at the bottom-right of your window.
*Meeting location
Your guide, or one of our crew, will greet you at the pier and escort you to our downtown marina and outfitting room. Look for a sign with your last name. If you are coming off of the Norwegian Bliss, Norwegian Encore, Norwegian Sun, Norwegian Spirit, Norwegian Jewel, Oceania Regatta, or the Seven Seas Explorer, you are responsible for your own transportation to and from the Alaska Fish House (3 Salmon Landing Marina, Ketchikan, Alaska 99901).

Alaska Salmon & Halibut Fishing
Anyone can put a line in the water, but it takes special skill to catch Alaskan salmon, halibut, and bottom fish. After spending most of their lives unraveling the mysteries of Alaska fishing, your experienced fishing guide is skilled at instructing you on the ins and outs of Southeast angling. What's more, they really enjoy spending the day teaching you what you need to know. As fishing conditions change throughout the season, and taking into account the day's tides and weather, this multi-species Alaskan fishing expedition allows you to head out with confidence that you will catch fish. Your captain will recommend those species that have been producing the most in recent weeks, and help determine a game plan for the day; salmon fishing with halibut as time allows, or vice versa. During the peak of the summer season from June 15th to August 15th at the height of the salmon run you will have the best chance at catching multiple species. * FISHING ITINERARIES: 1) If You Are Visiting Ketchikan By Cruise Ship: We suggest beginning the excursion thirty minutes after your ship is scheduled to arrive in Ketchikan. The following timeline is for a six-hour Ketchikan fishing adventure. - Meetup: Your guide, or one of our crew, will greet you at the pier and escort you to our downtown marina and outfitting room. Look for a sign with your tour name on it. - Outfitting & licensing: Upon arrival at our marina, your guide will collect the state fee for your fishing license. While we fill out your licensing information, you'll start to look like a local as we outfit you with waterproof boots, bib overalls, hooded jackets, hats, and gloves. Fully prepared, you'll head for the boat. - Running to the fishing grounds: Our location in the heart of Downtown Ketchikan allows for a short boat ride to the rich salmon fishing grounds south of Ketchikan. Depending on the area your guide chooses to fish the ride to your fishing area is 10 to 20 minutes from the marina. Our guides customize your journey depending on the season, tides, and weather conditions. During this ride guests frequently spy eagles, seals, whales, spawning salmon, and even black bears. You may take as many photographs as you wish, or simply sit back and soak it all in. - Fishing: On board our vessels designed and outfitted specifically for salmon fishing you will spend the next few hours trolling or mooching, or trolling for King, Coho, Pink Salmon, and halibut. Your seasoned guide will teach you the secrets of using a flasher, a hoochie, or a jig to lure in your salmon. You will enjoy the thrill of fighting your fish, netting it, and bringing it home to enjoy. - Return to the marina Make your way back to the marina enjoying another breathtaking ride. Upon arrival you will remove your fishing gear and your guide will ensure that you make it back to your ship in a timely fashion. If you choose to ship your fish home or have it smoked, a simple form needs filled out, and we will process your fish for shipping to arrive on the date of your choice. 2) If You Are Overnighting In Ketchikan: For those travelers who arrive in Ketchikan by the State ferry or Alaska Airlines, and are staying longer than one day, we can arrange for multiple days on the water. We suggest beginning your fishing trip before 10:00 a.m. The ardent fisherman normally leaves between 5:00 and 6:00 a.m. However, fishing is often better at tide change, so we will suggest the most opportune time for you to arrive at the fishing grounds so you can "catch the tide". The itinerary that we have provided is a one-day six hour trip. Most trips will differ only in the allotted time of fishing to fit your needs, and all trips can be duplicated for multiple-day trips. - Meetup: Guests normally meet their guides at the Alaska Fish House for a hot cup of coffee and a discussion of the day of fishing. The Alaska Fish House is located in the center of the marina where we outfit and depart for the fishing grounds. - Outfitting & licensing: Upon arrival at our marina, your guide will collect the state fee your for fishing license. While we fill out your licensing information, you'll start to look like a local as we outfit you with waterproof boots, bib overalls, hooded jackets, hats, and gloves. Private Fishing Charter (30 ft Cabin Cruiser)
Spend the day angling in the pristine Alaskan wilderness! When you charter our 30 ft cabin cruiser, you get the complete package. The boat is the largest in our fleet, with two 225 horsepower engines that will power you swiftly from fishing spot to fishing spot. Not to mention the heated cabin and the private head that will give you the comforts of home. The benefit of having extra time on the water with 8 hours rather than 6 allows you to travel farther than the rest of the pack and get to untapped waters where you can catch more fish! This is a multi-species excursion; we mainly target halibut and salmon, but your guide is ready to pursue any species from jigging the kelp reefs for lingcod to dropping deep with electric reels for the buttery black cod it depends on where you want to focus. Another benefit of chartering our 30-footer is the ability to drop crab and shrimp pots. We feel your trip isn’t complete until we host you for dinner. Your captain will fillet a couple of your freshly caught fish and hand-deliver them to our chef, who will begin to prepare your dinner for later that evening. We put this trip together to give you the lodge feeling with the benefit of leaving from the heart of Ketchikan!
Ketchikan Halibut Fishing
This fishing excursion is dedicated to catching the largest flatfish in the world, the Pacific Halibut. With a halibut rod and Penn reel in your own two hands, you’ll work the sandy flats, drift with the current, and jog in waters as deep as 300 feet. You may take as many photographs as you wish, or simply sit back and soak it all in. - Hunting for halibut Leave the tourists behind and venture into more secluded locations for authentic bottom fishing. You'll fish the way the locals do, complete with the quiet anticipation of jigging to the exhilaration of landing your Halibut. We won't pack our guests around a few shared poles; instead, we'll outfit each of you with a rod and tackle. And one of the best parts? The majority of our guests catch fish! - Return to the marina Make your way back to the marina while enjoying another breathtaking ride. Upon arrival, you will remove your fishing gear, and your guide will ensure that you make it back to your ship in a timely fashion. If you choose to ship your fish home or have it smoked, a simple form needs filled out. We will happily process your fish for shipping to arrive on the date of your choice.

Ketchikan Salmon Fishing
Spend the day Salmon fishing in the pristine Alaskan wilderness! This comprehensive fishing experience is intended for the avid fisherman who wants to learn the art of salmon fishing. Our private marina is located in downtown Ketchikan, so you'll have a full day to learn the best techniques for catching the Pacific salmon of Southeast Alaska. With this custom experience—limited to four guests at a time—every fisherman has the benefit of fishing their own rod. After a day of trolling, jigging, and mooching, you'll know the difference between a spoon and a hoochie, as well as the best way to catch whatever species is in season; typically king, coho, and/or pink salmon. Best of all, whatever you catch is yours to keep. In fact, our local processor will flash freeze it and send it straight to your door! The challenge with salmon fishing in Alaska is that it is completely reliant on the annual return of the salmon from the Gulf of Alaska to the inside waters. Accordingly, each of Alaska's five species of salmon has a limited number of days in which they are best available for exceptional fishing. Our Salmon Fishing excursion is based on the approach of local Alaskans. We leave the dock well informed as to what was working the day before to catch salmon: Where are they? How deep are they? What bait or flashers are working? Not only do we come fully prepared, we also have the time to pursue halibut and bottom fish if the bite is not on for salmon, or a particular group has limited-out. During the peak of the salmon run, from June 15th to August 15th, you will have the best chance of catching multiple species of salmon. After spending most of their lives unraveling the mysteries of salmon fishing, our fishing guides have the skills, knowledge, and equipment you will need to catch Alaska's salmon. Whether this is your first catch or one of many, your captain will make recommendations for your group as to what species and techniques are likely to prove successful on a given day. * FISHING ITINERARIES: 1) If You Are Visiting Ketchikan By Cruise Ship: We suggest beginning the excursion thirty minutes after your ship is scheduled to arrive in Ketchikan. Misty Fjords Flightseeing Tour
Southeast Alaska’s Misty Fjords National Monument is just a short flight from Ketchikan, allowing you unbeatable access to this pristine wilderness area via seaplane. Soar above this majestic work of nature with a unique personalized tour from the air. 3,000-foot granite walls that are fractured by time and scoured by glaciers thousands of years ago, plunge thousands of feet into deep fjords. The misted mountains lift snowfields and wildflowers above the tree line. Waterfalls cascade out of rock clefts and disappear into the forest slopes. The lush mountaintops are covered with ancient green trees clinging to the steep slopes while high valleys cradle picturesque lakes. Just when you think you have hit the peak of your experience, your floatplane will touch down on a saltwater fjord or mountain lake and feel the colossal beauty with all of your senses. Book a Misty Fjords tour today for a sightseeing experience like no other! Protected Wilderness: The Misty Fjords National Monument landscape and its living things are a protected 2.3 million acres. The area has been managed by the U.S. Forest Service continuously since it became a wilderness area in 1978. Your pilot will call your attention to any spectacular Alaskan wildlife often seen in the monument and the Tongass National Forest. Sightings may include brown and black bears, mountain goats, bald eagles, orcas, and humpback whales. On the occasion that wildlife is close by, photo opportunities will be afforded right from the floats of the plane! By the time you begin the journey back to Ketchikan, you will have made memories to last a lifetime. The Amenities: You’ll be able to learn all about the magnificent Misty Fjords through the live narration and conversation with your pilot. Every passenger is provided a voice-activated headset that is designed for aviation and allows communication between you, the pilot, and others onboard. During each flight, we will touch down on either a remote mountain lake or a calm saltwater inlet. When the weather permits, we can alter itineraries and cater to personal preferences. This ability allows the opportunity to view nearby whales, watch bears fish in the wild, celebrate a special occasion, or spend as much time as possible in this unique landscape. We are often able to take the airplane to shore, allowing you to step out and enjoy the beauty, take priceless photos, or simply breathe in the freshest, most fragrant air anywhere.
