“The design on this handmade drum was created by Tlingit Master Artist Israel Shotridge. Israel was born and raised in Ketchikan, Alaska in the heart of the Tongass National Forest, named after his tribal ancestors the Tongass Tribe. Israel is a member of the Bear Clan, known as the Teikweidi people, through his mother’s lineage. His father was a member of the Killer Whale Clan, also known as the Kaagwaantaan people, from the village of Klukwan, Alaska. Israel’s Tlingit name given to him by his mother is Kinstaadaal, which means “The Bear That’s Standing Up.” Israel has been very instrumental in perpetuating Tlingit Culture and Arts for over 30 years in southeast Alaska by restoring and replication dozens of monumental tribal totem poles, especially in the Ketchikan area. Israel is prolific at creating musem-quality masterpieces, for private, corporate, and public Native art collections. He and his family work hard at striving to be leaders in Northwest Coast Native art, sharing their cultural knowledge and creative skills with the people in western Washington, where Israel, his wife Sue, who is also his business partner, reside.”
