ABOUT THE PAINTING:
In Alaska, you see a lot of wildlife and the interactions that they have with each other. Part of what is so captivating is the relationship between these animals. I was inspired to paint this after witnessing a chum salmon successfully evade a bamboozled bear. In this painting, I wanted to capture the spray and the motion of the bear along with the terrified nature of the salmon. The bear, confused, did a little spin and I thought it would be intriguing to portray the same bear in the background and paint its different positions as it turns around to chase the chum salmon.
I love to be outdoors and one of my goals is to capture the essence and experience of being in Alaska. Painting is one of my favorite pastimes, and I sell paintings like these as prints throughout my town and at art markets. I love to hear the stories that people share whenever they are looking at art that I have created because of our mutual connection to nature.
ABOUT THE ARTIST: Alain Soltys-Gray
Born and raised in Juneau amidst glaciers and old growth forests, Alain has been inspired by the natural beauty of Southeast Alaska. From an early age, light and reflections of the rainforest caught his eye and have continued to be recurring elements in his art. Already an award-winning artist, Alain aspires to share his unique view of Alaska with you through his paintings. Alain was a valedictorian, graduating from Thunder Mountain High School in May 2022. He’s currently attending college at the Rhode Island School of Design, planning to bring what he learns back home to Alaska after he graduates. Follow him on Instagram: @alain_soltys_gray
ABOUT METAL PRINTS:
Alain’s original painting is printed on metal. MetalPrints™ represent a new art medium for preserving photos by infusing dyes directly into specially coated aluminum sheets. Because the image is infused into the surface and not on it, your images will take on an almost magical luminescence. The ultra-hard scratch-resistant surface is waterproof/weatherproof and can be cleaned easily - just avoid direct sunlight. Non-ammonia glass cleaner, water, or isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol can be used without harming the print surface. Use a clean, lint-free cloth to wipe off the print. No cleaners containing ammonia, abrasives, or corrosive chemicals should be used.
Each print is made with a float mount hanger so the print is ready to hang - no frame needed! These hangars are attached to the back of the print, and float the print 1/2-inch off the wall when hung.

Lighthouse Totems & Eagles Excursion
Join our Alaskan captain and their crew at our dock in Ward Cove – which was once home to North America’s largest operating pulp mill and a working salmon cannery – to board either the Lighthouse Endeavor or Totem Princess. Once aboard, you’ll get to settle into the inside heated main cabin or a seat on the outside observation deck, as you leave the dock for your cruise. Sip a hot chocolate or freshly-brewed coffee and keep your eye out for plentiful American bald eagle sightings. Your captain will navigate the vessel along our developed shoreline while our crew helps you spot the many eagle’s nests along our route. You’ll arrive in front of Totem Bight State Park, home to an Alaskan native clan house and 14 towering Tlingit and Haida hand-carved cedar totem poles, where you will learn about Ketchikan’s vibrant Alaska Native culture as well as the history of the park. We’ll provide you with beautiful, panoramic views of the entire park from the water, and an opportunity to get your photo taken with this stunning site. About halfway through the trip, you’ll leave the developed shoreline to head out to Guard Island Lighthouse, perched on its own island near the opening to Clarence Strait. (This fascinating landmark was established in 1904 and is still in operation today!) While here, take a minute to breathe in the fresh sea air and keep your eye out for the possibility of some of our favorite marine mammals – seals, sea lions, and, in May and September, sometimes even humpback and orca whales! You also may get a chance to see any number of seabirds, such as great blue heron, pigeon guillemots, or gulls. On your way back to Ward Cove, your captain will bring your tour vessel along the neighboring island of Gravina, showcasing beautiful views of the old growth Tongass National Forest, our world’s largest temperate rainforest, and give you the opportunity to possibly spot some land-based wildlife, such as Sitka Blacktail deer or – if you’re really lucky! – a black bear. Throughout the tour you’ll also get the chance to learn about the unique lifestyle of living on a remote Alaskan island directly from the locals who make this place our home! Highlights: *Guaranteed American bald eagle sightings *Possible sightings of harbor seal, moon jellyfish, pigeon guillemots, blue heron, deer, humpback and orca whales, or other wildlife *Panoramic views of Totem Bight State Park, home to an Alaskan Native clan house and a collection of 14 towering Tlingit, Haida & Tsimshian hand-carved cedar totem poles *Voyage to Guard Island Lighthouse to photograph the first lighthouse to be built in Alaska, completed in 1904 & still in operation today *Beautiful scenery embodied in the Tongass National Forest, the world's largest temperate rainforest, and the seascape of the Tongass Narrows
