Description
Hand-pulled limited edition woodblock print, edition of 14.
Just down the Lynn Canal from us is one of the coolest lighthouses in Alaska. It could be considered Haines "Pet" lighthouse since all travel by water passes very close and is an indicator that home is near.
It has been decommissioned & slated as a historical landmark.
About the Artist: John Svenson
I arrived in Haines Alaska to work for Alaskan Indian Arts in 1968 to study totem pole carving, engraving & silk screening. Being a young watercolorist from California I was heavily influenced by the regional "Masters" approach to applying paint to paper, very wet & impressionistic avoiding detail through swift action, though bold and representational at the same time. Having grown up in an art environment, my wife, (also an artist) & I founded the "Extreme Dreams" studios and fine art gallery in Haines. This business not only represented our art but our mt. guiding activities spanning 40 years. As time went by I began experimenting with a medium that was as far from holding a paint brush as I could get, molten glass. I found I could produce a watercolor effect with "frit" (colored powders) and fuse multiple layers to essentially make a painting. I attended classes at The Pilchuck School of Glass in Northern Washington. Since then hot glass, in addition to painting, has become a passion that increases with every project, opening endless worlds of possibilities.
They say a photo is worth 1,000 words. My life of art and adventure has been and still is, a wild ride. In both fields, memorable projects and great relationships have developed over the years. Alaska is home and the outer fringes of human habitation, my palette. Mountain Guide Lee Harrell was my mentor. He stressed safety first and could be ruthless if our minds strayed from the fact, death, or worse, could come because of a brainless movie. I am alive today because of his patience, which I've since learned, is essential when guiding. And then there was my introduction to the art world, long, long before coherency. I'm here with my father in his studio, he was already a very accomplished and successful sculptor. During these young years, I was already leaning towards flat art, painting was more "mobile".

Norris Adventure: Seaplane, Paddle & Glacier Hike
Experience 3 iconic Alaskan adventures—flightseeing, glacier hiking, and packrafting—all in just 5 hours! This is Juneau’s first multi-sport adventure of this kind. Packrafting is one of the fastest growing sports in Alaska. This Packraft adventure begins with boarding a six-passenger floatplane and taking off from the water. The scenic flight will head towards the mouth of the Taku Inlet, a gateway to flowing glaciers of the Juneau icefield. Keep an eye out for mountain goats, black bears and moose along the way. After landing on the Norris Glacier fed lake, hike over the glacially carved terrain to a cove where your packraft awaits. From here, you will be outfitted in single person packrafts and introduced paddling techniques by your guides. Once you launch your packraft, your paddle to the glacier will take you past icebergs, all while taking in the stunning mountain and glacier landscapes around you. As you approach the glacier, prepare to beach your boat right on the Norris Glacier, your guide will assist you in getting out of your packraft and into micro-spikes. Explore the moonscape-like area of the glacier all by foot and get panoramic views of Norris and Taku glaciers. Look for crevasses, glacier pools, moulins, and other incredible ice features. Glacier features come and go throughout the season, just like the ebb and flow of our glaciers. Upon completion of your glacier hike, slide back into your packraft and paddle back to shore. Your floatplane awaits to take you back to Juneau. what_is_included: * Professional Guide * Roundtrip van and floatplane transportation * All paddling equipment and glacier gear (helmet, microspikes, and trekking poles) * Forest Service permits * Rain Gear (hooded jacket, rubber boots, and pants) * Hearty snack pack * Souvenir water bottle what_is_not_included: We provide all the gear on our trips except for personal clothing. Regarding the weather, we recommend you prepare for rain and hope for sunshine. You are more than welcome to bring personal items on any of our tours (Camera, reusable water bottle, food, layers, etc.).
