About the Artist: Robert Miller

Robert Miller, the owner of Sitka-based Sea Fur Sewing, makes fur hats, mitts, and other items that not only keep people warm but also give them a part of Tlingit culture.

Miller, a Sitka native, started his business when he decided he wanted to become closer to his Tlingit culture. As his interest grew, in 2013 Miller, an avid hunter, one day launched his boat off Sitka and he wound up diving into the icy waters to catch three sea otters. When he returned to dry land with his catch, he saw a fellow Alaskan skinning an otter.

A fish biologist by profession, Miller, was captivated by the idea of using otter skins and sealskins to create hats and mitts, and he decided he could create a business out of his efforts.

Today, Sea Fur Sewing is the epitome of a personal success story. No longer flailing in the early years where orders were few and far between, Robert Miller now enjoys success. Beginning with Iditarod champion, Lance Mackey, he has earned the respect of Alaska’s greatest dog mushers, who proudly wear his beautiful and functional furs.

He has connected with TV shows, such as Life Below Zero, and was recently interviewed in Field and Stream magazine. To say that Robert Miller, Tlingit Native Alaskan, and Americans have honored his ancestors well is to know and understand his story. It is to see him connecting the ancient ways of his people to the modern challenges of our present world.

Whereas his ancestors hunted for food and clothing, Robert Miller does the same only now under the broader umbrella of conservation such as the building of the fish passes and the culling of the overabundance of sea otters in Southeast Alaska, where the ecosystem has somehow gotten off balance. But he also maintains the essence of the ancient ways with his dedication to subsistence for the elders in his community, who still rely on the land for much of their nourishment.

Just this year he has given away over 1600 pounds of seal meat and fat to Sitka elders, fresh meat from the sea that he personally vacuum seals and delivers to those who need and want it. He is a conscientious hunter who even went back with a flashlight near dark after a harvested seal slipped from his grasp into the water, just to retrieve the meat so the seal’s life would not have been given in vain. Fortunately, after looking for 45 minutes he found it and was able to salvage the meat.

Robert Miller is that rare mix of intelligent workers and wilderness explorers. Many would agree that he lives the best of both worlds. He is also a humble believer in the concept that we are all in this together— humans, animals, the earth, and each other. He is the American dream come true and he has done so without compromising the ancient heritage from which he rose. A life sprung from the ancient Tlingit ways.

Bear Glacier Heli/Kayak Half Day Combo Tour

Experience the best of air, land, and sea! This is the ultimate Alaskan experience. Break away from the crowds and access this untouched Alaskan gem. Begin with a scenic ride over the mountains and glaciers by helicopter followed by an exploration of a land-bound freshwater lagoon filled with monumental icebergs by kayak! One of the longest and largest glaciers off the Harding Ice Field Bear Glacier is a unique destination in Kenai Fjords National Park and will surely take your breath away. Simply stunning, rain or shine! Keep an eye out for seals sunning on ice sheets and bears browsing for berries. Routes vary depending on the current ice conditions in the lagoon. Bear Glacier is an extremely dynamic environment and each trip is a unique experience. This is as wild as Alaska gets! We drive you a short distance to our airport to meet your helicopter and helicopter pilot. From there, we fly over Resurrection Bay and up over the Kenai Mountains. We look for bears, mountain goats, and take in the amazing scenery. The helicopter flight is about 15 minutes each way. Once we descend into the beautiful and dynamic Bear Glacier area we land at our base camp located deep in the lagoon. Bear Glacier is visible most of the time from our landing site and camp. Kayaks will be waiting for your arrival. We paddle around the icebergs and get a closer look at Bear Glacier until it is time for the helicopter to come pick us up. About the Glacier: Bear Glacier is the largest glacier within the Kenai Fjords National Park and as it is ever-changing, never disappointing. We have the longest continuous guiding experience in Bear Glacier, unmatched by any other company in Seward, Alaska as well as a great safety record providing trips in remote Alaska for many years. Transport by Helicopter provides more paddle time than jet boats and water taxis and is much more reliable, comfortable, and safer. The views during this flight are unmatched! We originally tried the water taxi and jet boat options and decided to discontinue those due to the comfort, the safety of our guests. Because of those reasons and also access issues we determined that the helicopter was the best way to access this remote area. Helicopters are Robinson R-44 four-passenger helicopters which are the workhorse of the tourism businesses here in Alaska. About the Helicopter Flight: This flight is one of the most scenic ways that you can do to see the diverse topography that Alaska has to offer as you transition from sea level with its temperate rain forest boreal forests to alpine above treeline to then traveling over the scree field with snowbanks. Once you fly over the peaks you will descend down into a beautiful glacial lagoon where you will fly above the immense icebergs providing a rare view of the ice and its ice shelf that extends ours beneath the water level creating a beautiful sight you will then land at our Bear Glacier Base Camp that offers an in your face view of Bear Glacier which is the Kenai Fjords National Parks largest glacier. Often we see the local mountain goats, bears, and sometimes even wolverine as we fly over these rugged areas. About the Kayaking Adventure: This paddle is like no other that you will find in this part of Alaska. You will with your guide paddle from our base camp where we cache the stable tandem kayaks which we use to paddle in this iceberg-laden area. The icebergs can be beautiful but also can be very unpredictable and hazardous due to their movements. Your guide will lead you through this area providing glacial interpretation and travel routes as you paddle and view these beautiful icebergs.
