Description

This medallion celebrates the 25th anniversary of our popular “Panner Joe” medallion design.

Gold mining has played an important role in Alaska’s history and continues to be a significant industry in the state. The Klondike Gold Rush of the late 1800s brought thousands of prospectors to Alaska in search of fortune, and many of them struck it rich. Today, gold mining in Alaska takes many forms, from large-scale operations to small-scale, artisanal mining. The state is home to numerous mines that produce significant amounts of gold. Fort Knox Mine, the Pogo Mine, and the Kensington Mine are a few of them. Gold mining in Alaska is not only an important economic activity but also a historical legacy of the state.

These medallions are available in golden bronze, 1 oz .999 fine silver, 1 oz single gold relief (24k plating on front of the silver coin) and 1 oz double gold relief (24k gold plating on both sides). We put a natural gold nugget in the gold pan of each of the silver and gold relief medallions. Our 1 oz. medallions are similar in size to a silver dollar and it is packaged in an airtight container and handsome gift box. The reverse features our popular “Land of the Midnight Sun” design.

Alaska Mint

My wife Michele and I are the owners and operators of the Alaska Mint. I was 4 years old when my parents moved our family to Alaska from Colorado. They were young and ambitious, my Dad worked as a “roughneck” on oil platforms until they had saved up enough money to start a small jewelry shop. In 1967, Robuck & Sons, our families first jewelry business was born. Since then our family has had several stores around Alaska. In 1990 after testing with a sidewalk vendors cart for a few summers, I opened a location in downtown Anchorage where we could manufacture and sell souvenir coins, natural gold nuggets, and other Alaskan gifts. Originally, we produced the art work and had our medallions manufactured outside of Alaska. Then we started acquiring and assembling the equipment to mint silver and gold medallions right here in Anchorage. We started with one coin design. We now have thousands of dies. All of our medallions are struck in our location on 4th Avenue in downtown Anchorage. Our medallions are detailed reproductions of original sculptures. Many have a limited mintage and are highly collectible. We buy raw gold from placer miners and gold bearing quartz that is mined deep underground. From these natural elements, we fashion beautiful, one-of-a-kind jewelry that is a valuable addition to any collection. While the pieces are rare, they are surprisingly affordable. The items available in our store are either made in our shop, or by one of our longtime jewelers. We are proud of our company history and look forward to share the Alaskan experience through the Alaska Mint. Our two sons, Gunnar and Hunter, are also working with us. They are a great addition to our creative team. Mike and Michele Robuck Owners & Operators of Alaska Mint

Chilkat Photography Tour- Departs from Skagway

Escape the crowds of Skagway and focus on photographing the stunning scenery of the Chilkat Valley. Cradled at the base of the Chilkat Peninsula, flanked by the Lynn Fjord and Chilkat River, Haines is filled with natural wonders. Your expert photography guide will assist you in capturing the best of the Chilkat Valley’s unique attractions. From Skagway, the trip begins with a 45-minute ferry ride along the steep-walled fjords connecting Skagway to Haines. Over a dozen unnamed waterfalls drop hundreds of feet from the cliff sides on both sides of the boat. Marvel at the scenery and look for humpback whales, harbor seals, and bald eagles. Arrive in Haines, and meet your professional photography guide. Your guide will select his favorite locations and provide you with ample time to set up the best shots. Depending on the lighting and weather, different locations in the Chilkat Valley boast specific photographic highlights. May, June, and July feature wildflowers and eagles. Beginning in August, pink salmon—the smallest and most abundant of the Pacific salmon varieties—begin their run up the Chilkoot River to spawn. This is the best opportunity to see brown bear as they are often witnessed feeding along the banks of the river. When bears are present, every effort will be made to give you safe bear viewing and photography. The theme is flexibility, fun and learning rather than adherence to a rigid schedule. Even a simple point-and-shoot camera will work. But by all means, bring all your photo gear. The tour includes a boxed lunch so that you can eat when you want to and focus on getting the shots that you desire. You’ll return to Skagway via shuttle catamaran.
