What We Will Do
At the dock in Skagway, you'll meet up with your tour guide, and be escorted to our 15-passenger van. Your excursion will begin with a drive through historic downtown Skagway which is a part of the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park. You’ll learn about the town’s gold rush history and enjoy stories about the stampeders who passed through town in hopes of striking it rich in the Yukon.
From town we’ll head up to the town overlook to get a different perspective on present-day Skagway. Once you’ve had a chance to take photos your tour will continue north up the Klondike Highway toward the summit of the White Pass. On the way, we will pass through the lush rainforest and drive by multiple waterfalls. There are many photo opportunities of beautiful alpine lakes, hanging glaciers, and towering snow-capped peaks on this excursion.
At the summit, you’ll be able to get out and stretch your legs and take in the dramatic alpine landscape. Our ride then continues through Canadian customs into British Columbia. We’ll make multiple tours stops throughout the ride ensuring ample photo opportunities including the “Yukon Territory” sign.
After about an hour on the road, we’ll reach Carcross, Yukon on the banks of Lake Bennett, and a highlight of the tour. Here you’ll have free time to explore the small local shops and enjoy a great view of the lake made famous by the Klondike Gold Rush. From Carcross, we’ll start our journey back south toward Skagway. We’ll make a stop at the “Welcome to Alaska” sign for photos and then return through the U.S. Border station on our way back to Skagway. *Passports required for this tour

- Where will I meet my tour guide?
Your guide will meet you 15 minutes prior to the tour start time to make sure all necessary paperwork is completed. If you are arriving by cruise ship, your guide will meet you at the end of the pier where your ship docks at. Otherwise, the meeting location is the Small Boat Harbor sign.

Your tour guides are experts in the industry. They are fun, well-trained, and passionate about guiding and sharing their expert knowledge about the history and natural wonders of Haines and Skagway, Alaska with you! Our staff undergo extensive training and hold current first-aid (mostly WFR and WEMT) certifications. Many of our guides also lead courses and guided expedition trips and excursions for us both in Alaska and throughout the world.

Our tours embrace Southeast Alaska’s unpredictable weather. Our tours run rain or shine. If in a rare instance, the weather does cause us to cancel the tour you will be refunded in full and provided with assistance with finding an alternative activity for the day.
- What wildlife will I see?
Though wildlife can never be guaranteed, bald eagles, ravens, squirrels and harbor seals are frequently seen in Skagway. In the Yukon, there is a possibility of seeing larger mammals such as the occasional black bear or coastal brown bear, or possibly moose.

A full 100% refund will be provided if you cancel 14 days prior to your trip departure date; a 50% refund will be provided for cancellations between 14 days and 96 hours (4 days) prior to your tour departure. No refunds will be provided if you cancel within 96 hours (4 days) of the trip departure, or if you fail to show up within 5 minutes of your trip time.
If your trip is cancelled by Alaska Mountain Guides Adventures, Inc., or Chilkat Guides, Ltd.: All deposits and tour payments will be refunded in full. We will not be responsible for any costs associated with cancellations including, but not limited to: credit card fees, flight cancellation fees, flight change fees, and/or associated lodging and meal fees.

Kelgaya Point Hike
Come see the amazing mountain and ocean views of Southeast Alaska on this fabulous coastal hike. Watch for such wildlife as eagles, whales, seals, and bears as you trek over terrain ranging from old growth forest to beachfront trails. Join this spectacular hiking adventure that immerses you in the incredible beauty of Southeast Alaska, where you will be surrounded with amazing mountain and ocean views. Your adventure begins with a fascinating driving tour of the town, including Fort Seward National Historic Landmark and the parade grounds. Your guide will regale you with the interesting history and culture of the Haines area including the local gold rush and chronicles of the Native Tlingits. From the trailhead, spend the next 2.5 to 3 hours hiking, surrounded by views of towering, snow-capped mountains and Lynn Canal. Your naturalist guide will share his/her knowledge of the area’s flora and fauna, and the amazing glacial history of Alaska. You may see eagles, waterfowl, whales, seals, bears and moose. Each group is outfitted with binoculars to maximize your opportunities to see up-close the wildlife and the spectacular mountain and river scenery. Midway through your hike you will take a beach break to enjoy a delicious smoked salmon snack and to take in the magnificent views. This is a great family experience and kids are welcome. Itinerary * ~10 minutes – Your friendly guides will meet you near the Port Chilkoot Cruise Ship Dock in Haines. Before departing you’ll be able to ask any questions that you might still have about your upcoming hike and you’ll have the opportunity to use the restrooms before departing. * ~15 minutes – From our meeting point we’ll take a short drive through historic Fort Seward on our way to the Kelgaya Point trailhead. * ~5 minutes - At the trailhead your guide will give you a thorough safety briefing and orientation before we hit the trail. * ~2.75 hours – We’ll hike through old growth rainforest out to the rocky beach along the Lynn Fjord. White Pass Mountaineering Adventure
This tour is a full-day adventure into an off-trail, above-tree-line alpine area of White Pass. This tour is only recommended for hikers and mountain climbers looking for a challenging adventure in the wilds of Alaska. Our trip begins with a 40-minute van ride into the mountains and up the White Pass, which borders Alaska and the Yukon Territory in Canada. After we gear up, we’ll leave the road and venture into the alpine wonderland of White Pass. The nature of the tour and route conditions varies depending on the time of the year. In May and June, the conditions on the route are likely covered in snow and will require a combination of snow-shoeing and stream crossing. Later in the season, we’ll still encounter snow up higher on the peaks, but the access route will likely be snow free and involve off-trail hiking through alpine grasses and wildflowers, scrambling on rocks, and the occasional stream crossing. Our route will cover about 6 miles and gain up to 3,000 feet in elevation. Typically, our objective is to climb to the summit of Feather Peak or Mount Cleveland, both of which stand at about 5,500 feet. Both high points offer incredible views of the surrounding jagged peaks and wilderness of White Pass. However, there are a series of high points and routes that your guide may choose from. We may use crampons, ice axes, ropes, and other technical equipment to access the summit, however, there are also moderate routes to the summit that can be done without ropes. Safety is always our top priority. The exact route will depend on conditions, group ability, and guide choice. Even if the summit isn’t possible for the day, there are incredible waterfalls and scenic views to enjoy on this alpine hiking adventure. We allow for a full 8 hours for this adventure, however, timing in the mountains can be variable. We’ll be sure to get you back to your cruise ship on time. Our mountain guides are skilled at instruction and are excited to help teach snowshoe technique and basic mountaineering skills along the way. Weather can be quite variable at the pass. It is possible to have sunshine, whiteout foggy conditions, 30mph winds, rain, and even snow all on the same day. Temperatures are likely 10-20 degrees cooler than at sea level. It is important to dress in layers and avoid bringing cotton clothes. We operate this trip rain or shine, so good clothing and preparation are essential to thoroughly enjoy the adventurous experience. A waterproof jacket and pants, extra warm layers, and good hiking boots are essential. (~15 min) – Driving town tour of Skagway and visit to Skagway overlook (~20 min) – Unload and head into the backcountry, crossing a few small streams (~40 min) – Depart Skagway and drive up the White Pass (~2 hours) – As we gain elevation, we'll ascend an exposed ridge with some steeper snow and rock scrambling bringing us to a high point. Along the way, we'll stop to eat snacks and have lunch. (~3 hours) – We'll ascend up through tundra (or snow), taking short breaks about every hour or so. We'll bypass a series of beautiful waterfalls, and make our way toward the upper part of the mountain (~2 hours) – We'll descend back down the mountain, and back to the road. This spectacular kayaking tour immerses you in the incredible beauty of wild Alaska! You will have the opportunity to see amazing blue glaciers, breathtaking waterfalls, and extraordinary wildlife and fauna! Join professional kayak guides for an exciting paddling adventure on the gorgeous Chilkoot Lake. This is a fantastic paddling excursion for all abilities and no experience is necessary. Your tour begins as you board a high-speed catamaran for a scenic 45-minute cruise along North America’s longest and deepest fjord to Haines. Along the way, you’ll witness spectacular views of waterfalls and ice-sculpted peaks as your guide points out marine wildlife. Upon arrival in Haines, you will board a motorcoach that will take you on a beautiful 40 minute drive to Chilkoot Lake. Once you have arrived at the water you will receive a brief safety orientation, be outfitted with flotation vest and rubber boots, and get familiarized with your sea kayak. At least the next 1.5 hours will be spent enjoying the breath-taking scenery that Alaska is famous for! While on the water, you will be surrounded with towering mountains, glaciers, rivers, and fabulous wildlife. There are frequent sightings of whales, otters, eagles, bears, and more. Chilkoot Canoe Wildlife Safari Tour (Skagway Departure)
After meeting your tour representative in Skagway, you'll board a high speed catamaran for a 45 minute boat ride to the town of Haines. Upon arrival into Haines, we'll take a short tour of Fort Seward, a 30 minute drive from downtown Haines and then head up the Lutak Inlet to the Chilkoot River Valley. The Chilkoot corridor offers incredible wildlife viewing. Brown Bears, eagles, mountain goats, and spawning salmon are commons sights. Our guides are expert naturalists and enjoy sharing their love and knowledge of the Alaskan wilderness. Once at the Lake, we’ll head out onto Chilkoot Lake in stable motor assisted Voyageur Canoes. Our Canoes are built using similar dimensions as the canoes used by trappers and gold miners at the turn of the century. Powered by either paddle or motor, this tour offers guests the opportunity to paddle in the serenity of Chilkoot Lake, while also having the advantage of relaxing and taking photographs when it’s time to take a break from paddling. We’ll be out on the water for about 2 hours and explore the inlets, coves, salmon spawning streams and numerous waterfalls that spill off of the mountains into the lake. After enjoying the beautiful views on the lake, we’ll return to Haines and serve a picnic-style lunch at a private ocean beach location. Following lunch, we'll load up back onto the fast ferry for the return trip to Skagway. * Timings: (~75 minutes) Your friendly dock representative will meet you near the Skagway Small Boat harbor sign and restrooms. We will provide answers to any questions that you might have about your upcoming excursion and get you ready to board the ferry to Haines. We’ll help you board the comfortable ferry for the 50-minute narrated, scenic journey to Haines. (~60 minutes) Upon arrival in Haines, restrooms will be available and you’ll meet your guide and driver. From here we’ll depart for an interpretive drive through historic Fort Seward and continue to Chilkoot Lake. Along the way, we’ll drive along the shoreline of the Lynn Fjord and the wildlife-rich Chilkoot River. (~15 minutes) When we arrive at Chilkoot Lake you’ll have the opportunity to meet your other guides and take in the stunning views of the pristine lake. Your guides will help you get fit with a PFD (life jacket), rubber boots and canoe paddle. You’ll then receive a thorough safety briefing and orientation before boarding the 31’ long voyageur canoe for your adventure. (~90 minutes) – We’ll spend the next hour and a half experiencing Chilkoot Lake while our stable voyageur canoes. It is an excellent way to take in the fantastic views by water and if the wind picks up or you’re ready to relax, we will use the quiet 4-stroke motor to move around. (~15 minutes) – Once back at the put-in we’ll trade your rubber boots and PFD’s back in for your shoes and you’ll have time to enjoy our private deck and spotting scopes to take in the views of the lake and surrounding mountains and waterfalls one more time. (~40 minutes) We’ll then board our transportation and head down to the ocean for lunch. (~30 minutes) At our private ocean side picnic area, you’ll enjoy a picnic-style lunch provides great views of the Lynn Fjord in a private setting. (~50 minutes) Once we wrap up with lunch we’ll head over to the ferry dock where you’ll have the opportunity to use the restrooms and take additional photos of Haines before enjoying the scenic ride back up the fjord to Skagway. (~15 minutes) Upon returning to Skagway, a short walk will bring you back to our original meeting point, just a few minutes walk or shuttle to downtown Skagway and all three cruise ship docks.
Mount Riley Guided Hiking
Mt. Riley is the highest point on the Haines Peninsula. It is a strenuous day hike through mostly temperate rain forest. It has a gorgeous summit and several viewpoints throughout the hike. Your adventure begins at the pier where you will meet your professional hiking guide. After a narrated drive through the historic Fort Seward, we’ll continue on for about 15 minutes along the Haines Peninsula to the trailhead for Mt. Riley. Along the way, your guide will tell you about the history and geography of Haines. It is a beautiful drive with many scenic photo opportunities. Once at the trailhead, the hike begins over rolling terrain through temperate rainforest. After about ¼ mile, we start to gain elevation as we make our way up switchbacks through the forest. Throughout the hike, your knowledgeable naturalist guide will talk about the flora and fauna of the region. Depending on the exact route the total hiking distance is between 5-8 miles and the elevation gain is approximately 1,500ft to the summit, which is at 1,760ft. Throughout the hike we’ll enjoy some snacks and water on our way to the summit, which boasts a fantastic 360-degree view of the Lynn Fjord and beyond. We’ll stop along the way for a picnic lunch, after which, we may elect to hike down the opposite side of the mountain towards the east side of the peninsula and descend towards Battery Point. After a stop at the view point of the beautiful beach of Kelgaya and Battery Point, the last mile leads us to the Battery Point trailhead where we’ll get picked up and return to the pier. Before departing you’ll be able to ask any questions that you might still have about your upcoming hike and you’ll have the opportunity to use the restrooms before departing. * ~20 minutes – From our meeting point we’ll head out the scenic Haines peninsula to the Mt. Riley trailhead. * ~10 minutes – At the trailhead your guide will give you a thorough safety briefing and orientation before we hit the trail. * ~2.5 hours – From the trailhead we’ll hike up Mt. Riley stopping along the way for lunch. Your expert guide will share their knowledge of the native flora and fauna and the unique geological history of the area. Enjoy plenty of photo opportunities throughout the hike. * ~2.5 hours – We’ll continue from sweeping vistas on the summit of Mt. Riley down to the east side of the peninsula along the shores of the Lynn Fjord past Battery Point and back to the trailhead. * ~20 minutes – A short drive will bring us back to our meeting point near the Port Chilkoot dock and a short walk from downtown Haines and many shops and restaurants.

After meeting your tour representative in Skagway, you'll board a high-speed catamaran for a 45-minute boat ride to the town of Haines. Upon arrival in Haines, we'll take a short tour of Fort Seward, a 30-minute drive from downtown Haines, and then head up the Lutak Inlet to the Chilkoot River Valley. The Chilkoot corridor offers incredible wildlife viewing. Brown Bears, eagles, mountain goats, and spawning salmon are common sights. Our guides are expert naturalists and enjoy sharing their love and knowledge of the Alaskan wilderness. Once at the Lake, we’ll head out onto Chilkoot Lake in stable motor-assisted Voyageur Canoes. Our Canoes are built using similar dimensions as the canoes used by trappers and gold miners at the turn of the century. Powered by either paddle or motor, this tour offers guests the opportunity to paddle in the serenity of Chilkoot Lake, while also having the advantage of relaxing and taking photographs when it’s time to take a break from paddling. (~90 minutes) – We’ll spend the next hour and a half experiencing Chilkoot Lake while our stable voyageur canoes. It is an excellent way to take in the fantastic views by water and if the wind picks up or you’re ready to relax, we will use the quiet 4-stroke motor to move around. (~15 minutes) – Once back at the put-in we’ll trade your rubber boots and PFDs back in for your shoes and you’ll have time to enjoy our private deck and spotting scopes to take in the views of the lake and surrounding mountains and waterfalls one more time. Yukon Tour (Early and late season only)
This incredible scenic drive is always an option even when many things are closed down or not yet open for the season. It is my pleasure to offer a beautiful tour at the extremes of the season. The early spring will likely have snow in sections of this drive and the late season will have gorgeous fall colors! Once we have picked everyone up from our central meeting point, we will tour through the historic district in Skagway. Then we will make our way out of town up the summit pass. At the top of the summit, we will reach British Columbia, Canada. Then we will tour through a weather-worn dwarfed forest called the Tormented Valley. Here we will take in the scenery and enjoy this strange, but beautiful landscape. After the Tormented Valley, we will come to Boreal Forest and the lakes region of the tour. Through these two regions, we can stop, take pictures, and take in the changing scenery as we drive deeper into Canada. From here we will continue to the border of British Columbia and the Yukon and touch into a Canadian Territory that many never see. After this point, we will travel back on the same beautiful highway and return to Skagway where you can be dropped off in town.

Join veteran Iditarod and Yukon Quest mushers Michelle Phillips and Ed Hopkins and their friendly, loyal and well-cared-for Alaskan Huskies at their breathtaking summer mushing camp. Meet our super-friendly canine athletes. Learn all about life as a long distance musher. Check out all the gear and stand on the runners of a racing sled. Hear some tales from the trail. Cuddle with our newest athletes: the puppies! -($45 per adult, $40 per kid aged 5 - 12, $0 per kid aged 0 - 4) Experience everything as above, but a 20 minute sled dog trek with the dogs is included! Each trek can take up to 6 at a time while you take the dogs on a fun-filled work out, guided by a musher or trainer. For groups over 15, we will divide the group into different activities at the sled dog camp to ensure everyone has ample time to experience the sled dog trek, puppies, and educational talk. -($15 per person) - Experience authentic gold panning in the Yukon while at the Tutshi Sled Dog Camp! This option is perfect for groups of 30 or more to ensure everyone has time to play with the puppies & do the dog sled trek. This option will add 30 minutes of time to the tour. OR instead, we can visit (2) Visit Wild Adventure Yukon (formerly known as Caribou Crossing) where you will have the chance to participate in the following: -($15 per person admission fee) Formerly called Caribou Crossing Trading Post is a hub of gold rush history that gives visitors the opportunity to experience the Yukon Territory through activities such as gold panning and Iditarod dog cart rides. It also boasts a museum, petting farm, husky puppies, a cafe, and gift shop—making it an all-around great stopover on a road trip or tour. -($45 per person) Race through the Yukon wilderness as you take Alaskan Huskies on an exercise training. This 15 minute ride is fully guided on a side-by-side and guide. Includes Tale of the Trail talk. -($36 per adult, $32 per kid) Our homestyle BBQ chicken is prepared fresh daily for a serving time of 11:30 to 2:00 by our chef Dexter. The meal is composed of grilled Chicken, Roasted Potatoes, homemade coleslaw, and all you can eat Donuts, with bread, butter, coffee and tea. Vegetarian option includes veggie daal with rice. About the Show For nearly 100 years The Days of '98 Show has been dazzling audiences with music, laughter, and the legendary CAN CAN! Experience a day in the life of Jefferson "Soapy" Smith, Alaska's most notorious outlaw, who reigned during the wildest days of Skagway during the 1898 Klondike Gold Rush. This colorful vaudevillian musical brings you into the "Skaguay" of 1898 with the thrills and frills of the dancehalls and the chills felt by gold rush stampeders along the trail of '98. This show has been a Skagway tradition for cruise ship, bus, and RV visitors for over 100 years and is an iconic performance and a "must see" while in Skagway. Who Was Soapy Smith? November 2, 1860 - July 8, 1898 All of the events depicted in this original play are taken from the Skagway historical record and center on Soapy Smith's reign over the town during the Klondike Gold Rush of 1897 and 1898. Jefferson Randolph Smith was born in Georgia in 1860 and ventured west as a young man. He learned his trade as a con man during the silver and gold rushes of Colorado and eventually made it to Skagway in the fall of 1897. Here, he and Colorado cohort "Rev." John Bowers assembled what was reputed to be the largest band of thieves in North America. Skagway was described by Canadian Mountie Sam Steele as "a little better than hell on earth," and Smith's gang reigned supreme for nine months. Smith had a wife and family in St. Louis but he befriended Miss Belle Davenport and her "soiled doves," Alice and Mollie in Seattle before heading North. While his men did most of the dirty work, Soapy tried to establish himself as a solid citizen of Skagway. He contributed to the building of Skagway's first church and founded an "Adopt a Dog" program. City surveyor Frank Reid and others saw through Smith's good deeds and tried to run the con man and his gang out of town, but Smith was able to rally much of the business community around him. Soapy was riding high on July 4, 1898, as he rode his white horse up Broadway and then stood on the platform with the Governor of Alaska. Four days later he was dead man. His gang robbed a Nanaimo, British Columbia stampeder named J.D. Stewart of $2,800 in gold dust. Smith stood by his troops and refused to give the gold back. Reid's vigilante Committee of 101 gathered at the Juneau Co. Wharf as there was no hall in Skagway big enough to contain the mob. Most of Smith's men ran for the hills, but Soapy grabbed his Winchester and headed for the wharf to break up the meeting. You'll witness the events leading up to this historic moment. In 1923, Princess steamships started bringing tourists to Skagway. The local residents decided to put on a show for them to raise money for their local hockey team. The team needed new uniforms to compete in the White Pass Athletic League against their rival team in Whitehorse, Yukon. The show became an instant tradition and has been running ever since.

Yukon Extended Summit Drive Tour
At the dock in Skagway, you'll meet up with your tour guide, and be escorted to our 15-passenger van. Your excursion will begin with a drive through historic downtown Skagway which is a part of the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park. You’ll learn about the town’s gold rush history and enjoy stories about the stampeders who passed through town in hopes of striking it rich in the Yukon. From town we’ll head up to the town overlook to get a different perspective on present-day Skagway. Once you’ve had a chance to take photos your tour will continue north up the Klondike Highway toward the summit of the White Pass. On the way, we will pass through the lush rainforest and drive by multiple waterfalls. There are many photo opportunities of beautiful alpine lakes, hanging glaciers, and towering snow-capped peaks on this excursion. At the summit, you’ll be able to get out and stretch your legs and take in the dramatic alpine landscape. Our ride then continues through Canadian customs into British Columbia. We’ll make multiple tours stops throughout the ride ensuring ample photo opportunities including the “Yukon Territory” sign. After about an hour on the road, we’ll reach Carcross, Yukon on the banks of Lake Bennett, and a highlight of the tour. Here you’ll have free time to explore the small local shops and enjoy a great view of the lake made famous by the Klondike Gold Rush. From Carcross, we’ll start our journey back south toward Skagway. We’ll make a stop at the “Welcome to Alaska” sign for photos and then return through the U.S. Border station on our way back to Skagway. *Passports required for this tour * Timings: (~15 min) – Driving town tour of Skagway and visit to Skagway overlook. (~10 min) – Photo opportunities at the Skagway overlook (10 minutes). (~35 min) – Tour up the Klondike Highway to White Pass summit and the “Welcome to Alaska” sign (5-10 minutes at the sign). (~2 hours) – Drive to Carcross, Yukon stopping along the way for photo opportunities at Tutshi Lake, the “Welcome to the Yukon” sign, and the Bove Island overlook – Stops vary depending on group goals and changing photo opportunities as they present themselves. (~30 min) – Free time in Carcross, Yukon, and Lake Bennett (20-30 minutes). (~1.5 hours) – Drive back to Skagway stopping along the way for photo opportunities
