About us
It was a 2-month sea kayaking trip through Southeast Alaska that became a life-changing experience for Sockeye Cycle owner Thom Ely. In 1987 Thom moved to Haines full-time and bought an existing bike shop and in 1988 our first tours were offered.
Today, we are the oldest operating full-service bicycle business in Alaska. Our touring expertise is in our own region of Southeast Alaska and Northern Canada. We are staffed with well qualified seasonal guides and veteran Alaskan locals and offer a variety of tours ranging from a few hours in duration to day trips and 11-day excursions.
Whether you take a day tour or one of our extended adventures, we guarantee that you will get a taste of the spirit and hospitality of the North as only a local company can show you.

What we'll do
Mountain bike or hybrid are our most popular bike rental. Hardtrail mountain bikes or hybrid bikes are great options for exploring town and nearby trails. Specialized Hardroc Disc mountain bikes and Specialized Crosstrail and Ariel hybrids (with rear racks) are available for rent.
What to expect / what's provided
*Full day / half day options
*Half day rentals are 4-hours (with preferred pickup at 9am or 1:30pm) and full day rentals are available during store hours
*Hourly rentals are also available in our shop but cannot be reserved in advance
*You must fill out a rental form to pick up your bike which includes a waiver
*A parent or legal guardian must sign for minors Helmets and locks are included with each bicycle rental ID is required to pick up your rental
*Bike options:
-Trek Verve Hybrid Cruiser Bike (comfortable cruisers that can take you anywhere in Skagway.) Trek Verve comfort hybrid cruisers are a great option to explore the Skagway area. They have a comfortable, upright seating position, a larger seat, and a kickstand, but still include a full range of gears and disc brakes to tackle a range of rides. The "low step" frame options are designed have a much lower stand over height and are easier to get on and off without having to lift a leg up as high.
-Trek Dual Sport Bike (a great all-around option for exploring Skagway.) Trek's Dual Sport can handle a wide variety of riding. They come with wider tires, a small suspension fork, disc brakes, and a rear rack and kickstand. Great for cruising town, riding the Dyea road, and checking out some of the multi-use trails near Skagway.
-E-Bike (pedal-assist e-bikes give you a boost.) We offer Trek E-Bikes featuring high quality, Bosch mid-drive motors. All rentals are class 1 E-Bikes, renters must be age 16 per Alaska requirements. Trek Allant + 7 models are a capable hybrid with wide tires and a small suspension fork. These models include a rear rack and front and rear lights and large batteries offering 40-50 miles of range for most riders. Trek Powerfly models are e-MTB options with a larger suspension fork and pedal assist modes tuned for off-road riding.
-Gravel Road Bike (drop-bar gravel road bikes from Salsa and Trek.) Our road bike options include wider tires and disc brakes so that they can explore beyond the pavement. The road to Dyea is mostly unpaved and offers great viewpoints and areas to explore.
-Mountain Bike (full-suspension and hardtail options.) Skagway used the down time of the pandemic to build and improve trails. You can easily spend a half day or all day exploring purpose built MTB and multi-use trails within a quick ride of our shop. Choose between Trek Fuel EX 5 full-suspension and Salsa Timberjack hardtail MTBs. For those looking for a bigger adventure, we offer full day and multi-day rentals to take the bikes up to the extensive trail systems in Carcross and Whitehorse Yukon. These are world class trails within 1-2 hours driving from Skagway.
-Trek Tandem 2-Person Bike (these bicycles built for two are a great way to cruise Skagway.) The way to cruise Skagway. These bikes have been out to Dyea, up the pass, and have even won Skagway's 4th of July slow bike race... Lots of fun for 2 riders - some coordination required. Best for riders 5'7" - 6'2" in the front and 4'10" - 5'8" in the back.
*Pull-Behind Trailer OR Kids Bike
-We have an assortment of kids bikes and trailers so you can bring the young ones along. There are good options for short, flat rides in Skagway. There are not separated bikes paths in Skagway, but all of town is a residential area with speed limits of 25mph or less and many stop signs. It's a pretty friendly town for a family ride.
-Kids bikes with 24" wheels fit kids 4'3" to 4'10"
-Bikes with 20" wheels fit kids 3'9" to 4'4"
-Pull-behind child trailers and trail-a-bike options allow an adult to attach a child and bring them along for the ride. The child trailers are suitable for most kids ages 18 mo to about 5.
-Trail-a-bikes (also call tag-along bikes) work for most kids ages 4 to 8.
-All kids bikes and trailers must be rented with an adult rider.

Cancellation Policy
<p>8+ days before date of the tour or rental, reservations are refundable minus 5% for booking and processing fees.<br>Reservations cancelled 2-7 days from the start time will receive a 50% refund. Reservations are not refundable 48 hours or less from the start of the activity or rental. Some of our tours require you to bring a passport. We do not offer refunds for guests showing up unprepared. Please check if your tour requires you to bring a passport and plan accordingly. </p><p>Sockeye Cycle Co. retains the right to cancel a tour for any reason, in which case you will receive a full refund. We are prepared and supply gear for most weather scenarios and rarely cancel our tours due to weather.</p>
