* The Mendenhall Glacier is receding daily. Because the glacier is in a state of constant change, not all features may be present to be viewed. Groups will explore the bedrock from about a 100 yards from the glacier. This tour does not include trekking on the glacier
* A specific amount of time hiking near the glacier cannot be guaranteed. The amount of time at the glacier is dependent on the group’s pace and weather conditions
* Every participant must sign a Release of Liability/Assumption of Risk Form at the start of the trip. Alterations and/or deletions to the form are not permitted
faqs: * Will you get us back to our ship on time?
The majority of our trips are scheduled around cruise ship arrival and departure times. We allocate ample time before and after the tour to ensure you can comfortably make it back onboard your ship. Ensuring the punctual return of our guests to their ship is our top priority as a company.
* Will I have a chance to walk on the ice?
This tour does not get on the glacier. This excursion focuses on a close exploration of the glacier’s edges, allowing for safe hiking experiences on the surrounding bedrock. Distance from the glacier changes each season, expect to get within 300 yards of the glacier face.
* Are there ice caves at the glacier?
There are currently no accessible ice caves at the Mendenhall Glacier. Glaciers are incredibly dynamic forces of nature and are constantly changing. The presence of accessible ice caves was a feature of the glacier in the last phase of its life cycle, but it is now in a new phase where we are seeing frequent calving events revealing the deep glacier blue that the Mendenhall Ice Caves became so well renowned for.
* What will we be paddling?
You will be paddling either our large 29 ft or 22 ft canoes . The larger canoes can fit up to 12 guests and 2 guides, and the smaller up to 7 guests and 1 guide. These canoes offer the speed and stability that kayaks cannot.
* Are there physical requirements?
We require guests to be at a maximum of 250lbs and have a full range of mobility. Depending on the tour, guests will have to safely get in and out of packrafts/canoes and be able to hike and paddle for up to 3 hours. Guests may need to drag canoes or packrafts short distances and be physically fit to get in and out of watercraft, along with paddle watercraft continuously.

Above & Beyond Alaska, LLC (ABAK), is a local guiding company based in Juneau, the capital city, that is nestled below the Coast Mountains and beside the ocean in the heart of Southeast Alaska’s temperate rainforest . We have been exploring the Tongass National Forest, glaciers of the Juneau Icefield, and waters of Alaska’s inside passage for over 25 years and guiding others since 2002. ABAK offers an opportunity to explore any of the environments found around Juneau by kayak, foot, boat, or plane. Our goal is to provide a complete Alaskan wilderness experience by sharing with our clients our passion, technical know-how, and natural history knowledge.
Cancellation Policy
General
* Cancellations made at least 72 hours prior to a scheduled tour will be refunded in full.
* Cancellations made under 72 hours of a scheduled tour are non-refundable.
* Above & Beyond Alaska (ABAK) may cancel a trip due to low enrollment, unsafe weather or route conditions, clients not meeting physical requirements, or other safety issues. A full refund will be issued if the trip has not started. However, ABAK is not responsible for additional expenses (e.g., non-refundable airfare, meals, lodging). ABAK will fully refund any tour cancellations due to changes in the cruise ship sailings that result in the tour not being rescheduled.
Medical Cancellations
* For cancellations due to a medical reason, valid documentation from either a care provider or the cruise ship's doctor is required to be eligible for a refund.
* If a family or party member is ill on the day of the tour, medical documentation must be provided for a refund. Any passengers who stay behind with the ill person will not be eligible for a refund.
* Documentation must be provided within 2 weeks of tour cancellation to receive a full refund, otherwise the tour becomes ineligible for a refund.
Other Cancellations
* Failure to comply with any cruise ship regulations or provide required documentation, resulting in you being denied boarding and not being able to cruise or take your tour, will not be refunded.
* If you are traveling through Canada or any other country and are denied entry due to missing or delayed travel documents or visas, causing you to miss your tour, you will not be refunded.
* If you are traveling by air and miss your flight, you will not be refunded unless it was the fault of the airline and you can provide documentation from them.
Additional Information
* All cancellations must be submitted in writing within two weeks of the tour date to ABAK.
* Partial refunds will not include booking fees.
* The Fortress of the Bears Pack Creek Bear Tour includes a non-refundable $100 National Forest Service permit fee.
* ABAK highly recommends travel insurance for all clients to protect against unexpected travel changes.

Norris Adventure: Seaplane, Paddle & Glacier Hike
Experience 3 iconic Alaskan adventures—flightseeing, glacier hiking, and packrafting—all in just 5 hours! This is Juneau’s first multi-sport adventure of this kind. Packrafting is one of the fastest growing sports in Alaska. This Packraft adventure begins with boarding a six-passenger floatplane and taking off from the water. The scenic flight will head towards the mouth of the Taku Inlet, a gateway to flowing glaciers of the Juneau icefield. Keep an eye out for mountain goats, black bears and moose along the way. After landing on the Norris Glacier fed lake, hike over the glacially carved terrain to a cove where your packraft awaits. From here, you will be outfitted in single person packrafts and introduced paddling techniques by your guides. Once you launch your packraft, your paddle to the glacier will take you past icebergs, all while taking in the stunning mountain and glacier landscapes around you. As you approach the glacier, prepare to beach your boat right on the Norris Glacier, your guide will assist you in getting out of your packraft and into micro-spikes. Explore the moonscape-like area of the glacier all by foot and get panoramic views of Norris and Taku glaciers. Look for crevasses, glacier pools, moulins, and other incredible ice features. Waterfall Creek Peak Season Brown Bear Viewing
Begin your wilderness adventure with a scenic 30-minute floatplane flight. Be sure to have your camera ready as you glide over amazing landscapes and look out for marine wildlife below before touching down at Waterfall Creek. This is a relatively unknown, remote wilderness location that provides unmatched brown bear viewing during the peak of the salmon run, late July-August. After landing, disembark from the floatplane and wave goodbye to the Alaskan bush pilot. The primary viewing spot is a short walk down the rocky shoreline. Follow the sounds of the waterfall and splashing salmon, as the guide hikes the group to the viewing location. Brown bears may be seen at any time while ashore. The guide will direct to the best spots for viewing and photography. Groups will spend most time seated, quiet, and still to enhance the opportunities of seeing bears. While we do occasionally have close encounters, our goal is for the bears to ignore us and engage in their natural behaviors. After enjoying four hours of brown bear viewing, hike back to where your floatplane is waiting to whisk you back to Juneau. This is truly an Alaskan wilderness adventure! From the banks of Waterfall Creek, we’ll have the opportunity to watch bears fishing for salmon. While wildlife sightings are not guaranteed, the abundant bear population of the Waterfall Creek area rarely disappoints. Brown Bears are most active during the annual salmon runs (late July and August). Pack Creek Brown Bear Viewing
Join us for an unforgettable brown bear viewing adventure at the renowned “Fortress of the Bears” within the Pack Creek Bear Sanctuary, the premier coastal brown bear viewing area on Admiralty Island. Your day begins with a trip briefing and safety orientation led by your experienced wilderness guide, followed with a breathtaking 25-minute floatplane flight to Pack Creek. Upon landing, you’ll be warmly greeted by the dedicated rangers of Pack Creek. Your guide will then lead you on a journey along the very paths the bears tread, guiding you through shoreline and forest trails to prime brown bear viewing locations. Known as the “Fortress of the Bears,” Admiralty Island holds the Tlingit name Kootznoowoo, and it lives up to its title with an impressive brown bear population of approximately 1,800 brown bears. This island boasts one of the highest bear densities in the world, with roughly one brown bear per square mile. It’s home to about 10% of Alaska’s entire brown bear population, making it one of the most densely populated brown bear areas on the planet. From the banks of Pack Creek, you’ll have the incredible opportunity to observe bears in their natural habitat, whether they’re clamming or foraging on beach greens, salmon fishing in the creek, or enjoying a nap in the tall grass. While we can’t guarantee wildlife sightings, the abundant bear population in the Pack Creek vicinity seldom disappoints. Brown bears are most active during mating season (late May – June) and annual salmon runs (late July – August). We are grateful to the Tlingit village of Angoon for allowing us to share this part of their homeland with our guests. Pack Creek is an ecosystem teeming with diverse flora and fauna, providing abundant nourishment for the thriving brown bear population on Admiralty Island. Norris Adventure: Seaplane, Paddle & Glacier Hike
Experience 3 iconic Alaskan adventures—flightseeing, glacier hiking, and packrafting—all in just 5 hours! This is Juneau’s first multi-sport adventure of this kind. Packrafting is one of the fastest growing sports in Alaska. This Packraft adventure begins with boarding a six-passenger floatplane and taking off from the water. The scenic flight will head towards the mouth of the Taku Inlet, a gateway to flowing glaciers of the Juneau icefield. Keep an eye out for mountain goats, black bears and moose along the way. After landing on the Norris Glacier fed lake, hike over the glacially carved terrain to a cove where your packraft awaits. From here, you will be outfitted in single person packrafts and introduced paddling techniques by your guides. Once you launch your packraft, your paddle to the glacier will take you past icebergs, all while taking in the stunning mountain and glacier landscapes around you. As you approach the glacier, prepare to beach your boat right on the Norris Glacier, your guide will assist you in getting out of your packraft and into micro-spikes. Explore the moonscape-like area of the glacier all by foot and get panoramic views of Norris and Taku glaciers. Look for crevasses, glacier pools, moulins, and other incredible ice features. Glacier features come and go throughout the season, just like the ebb and flow of our glaciers. Upon completion of your glacier hike, slide back into your packraft and paddle back to shore. Aboard our 6 passenger whale-watching boats, enjoy a comfortable heated cabin with wide-viewing windows and spacious decks for wildlife spotting. Travel by deluxe jetboat to explore the very best of the Tracy Arm Wilderness Area, including exciting close-up views of the majestic Sawyer Glaciers. Relax in the warm, spacious cabin as your experienced captain guides you through scenic passages and into the heart of a wild place that has, until recently, been buried for centuries by glacial ice. Here, the extraordinary maneuverability of the Katlian Express will allow you to glide quietly past curious seals and icebergs – to get as close as possible to the ever-changing face of South Sawyer Glacier. Glacier Landing and Mountain Viewing Tour
Nothing says Alaska quite like glaciers! Come experience the wonder of nature on our 30 minute glacier landing scenic flight and landing. You will travel through a spellbinding glacier filled valley on the way to your landing where you will have the opportunity to get out at the toe of the glacier, take pictures, and touch glacier ice! Your tour begins in our office where we will get you properly outfitted for your excursion. We have boots, rain jackets, and even gloves for you to borrow. After you are geared up, it’s time to talk about safety! We pride ourselves on our excellent safety record – and were featured by the Alaskan Division of OSHA for our attentiveness to detail. All our passengers learn about how to safely enter and exit our helicopters as well as the key safety features on board. We primarily fly Robinson 44 helicopters which have room for three passengers as well as a small backpack or handbag. This means that everyone gets a window seat! If you are part of a larger group, don’t worry! We have multiple helicopters on site and are experts at working with large families and tour groups. We often take large families on this excursion because it is a great opportunity for family photos and to create that one-of-a-kind Alaskan holiday card. Then, it’s time for take off. If you’ve never flown in a helicopter, you will be amazed by the smoothness of the ride. Helicopters are far more comfortable than planes and our pilots have pinpoint precision as to where they can fly. Taking off from the airport, you will fly over a beautiful braided river towards Godwin Glacier. As you fly over the bay look for otters and whales. Sometimes, we will see bears and moose in this area. Godwin glacier will astound you — but that’s not where our journey ends. You’ll get to see the toe of Godwin Glacier before we turn into a mountain valley where you will fly by 3 glaciers: Porcupine Glacier, Snake-Tongue Glacier, and Hawk’s Glacier. This beautiful valley is a great place for family photos. The helicopter will land near the base of one of these three glaciers based on weather, group size, and your preference. When the helicopter lands, our pilots or guides will help snap some photos of you as explore the toe. Pose in front of glacier ice or make a snowball and enjoy the scenic vistas in front of you. Tour Highlights: - 15 Minute Helicopter Ride Our flight to our glacier dog sledding camp takes a beautiful scenic route up Godwin Glacier. Fly over incredible blue glacier ice and by immense waterfalls. On the return trip, fly through a stunning glacier-filled valley. Fly Over Godwin Glacier and See Seward from the Air.
