Juneau Whale Watching and Mendenhall Glacier Combo Tour
This is an enthralling opportunity to witness two jewels in Juneau - the graceful elegance of humpback whales and the serene beauty of the Mendenhall Glacier. Our fleet of whale watching boats and glacier shuttles offer a seamless combination of two of Juneau’s favorite activities and our most popular tour. Upon check in, you will either be escorted to one of our shuttles for a narrated 25-minute drive to the glacier or to the boat harbor for whale watching. Mendenhall is the world’s only drive up glacier. You can choose to hike to Nugget Falls (1.5 hours round trip), take the Photo Point Trail (40 minutes round trip), look for wildlife along the Steep Creek trail, or stroll up the easy walk to the Visitor Center. During your time on the water, you will be accompanied by a naturalist who explains the feeding habits of these magnificent creatures and identifies the many other kinds of wildlife that share these waters. Our whale watching boats are custom made to enhance your experience – a warm heated cabin with large viewing windows, and two decks to hurry to when the captain slows after spotting the whales. Juneau Whale Watching Tour
Our 2 hour whale watching adventure begins when we board a coach bus that departs downtown Juneau from the Mt. Roberts Tram parking lot. A 25 minute journey through the picturesque landscape of Southeast Alaska will take you to Auke Bay Harbor. "All aboard!” and you’re off to Alaska waters and the ultimate whale watching experience. On our quest for whales, we will be on the lookout for bald eagles, seals, sea lions, black bear and more of Alaska’s wildlife. The star of the tour is the humpback whale, but we are always looking out for the playful orcas. Once we spot a whale, the captain will slow down and allow you to go on the spacious viewing decks for a great photo opportunity. Our custom design vessels provides unrestricted viewing from inside the cabin as well as outside. Although the cabin is enclosed and heated, we recommend you dress in layers, after all it is Alaska! Harv's Original 6-Passenger Boat Public Experience
Join locally trained captains for a personalized Alaskan whale watching tour. Our departure times are not the same everyday because each day is different. Cruise ships arrive at different times and passengers may have different activities planned for the day. We schedule the tour for the time that best fits each guests' needs and time frame. Itinerary: If your tour time is 9:30am, this is the time we plan for transportation to leave! PLEASE arrive at least 15 minutes prior to the listed tour time, so that we can leave on time! We would then plan to arrive at the harbor where our boats depart by 10:00am. When you arrive at the harbor, you will be met by your captain or guide and have an opportunity to use the restroom on land (there is one on the boat, it's just not as roomy) and then you will head down the dock to board our vessel for your whale watching adventure! You will start heading back to the harbor at approximately 12:35pm (depending on where you are) so that you can be disembarking by about 12:55pm to meet your returning transport at 1:00pm. FAQs: **Q. What is the best time of the year to see whales around Juneau?** **A.** *The best months are May through September for Humpback Whales.* **Q. Do you have a whale sighting guarantee?** **A.** *No/Yes. Departing from Auke Bay, relax in a heated cabin with a hot cup of coffee and enjoy outside viewing areas while watching for wildlife. Try to visualize the isolated life of a "wickie", as lighthouse keepers were nicknamed, and consider what it would have been like to live here for a few years. Next, climb up the lighthouse tower, inspect the beacon, and take a look across beautiful Lynn Canal. After getting back to the boat, there's a 15-minute scenic ride to Yankee Cove, where you will meet up with your driver and enjoy a narrated trip. Your final stop at the Brotherhood Bridge viewpoint of the Mendenhall Glacier brings it all together, Alaska's history, wildlife and, epic scenery. Enjoy your short remaining ride to your cruise ship, reminiscing about this unforgettable look at a slice of Southeast Alaska history. Upon arrival at Sentinel Island, you will begin the next leg of your adventure with a short walk on a scenic boardwalk loop with photo ops along the way. Amazing views include Lynn Canal, (one of the longest and deepest fjords in the world) and the surrounding islands and waterways. Wildlife opportunities (likely, not guaranteed) *Humpback whales: Juneau, Alaska, is home to some of the world’s most fantastic viewing of humpback whales! Our captains and naturalists are the best in the business and have a 100% whale sighting success. The humpback whale is a baleen whale, and one of the largest members of the rorqual family. Adult females average 49 ft (15m) in length and weigh approximately 35 tons, with adult males being slightly smaller. *Killer whales: Adult male killer whales in the North Pacific may grow to a length of approximately 27 feet (8.2 m), whereas females grow to an average length of about 23 feet (7 m). Adult males may weigh almost twice as much as females, up to 13,300 pounds (6,000 kilograms). Killer whales are predominantly black in color with large white patches under the jaw and above and behind each eye. *Coastal wildlife: Auke Bay and Gastineau Channel provide a myriad of wildlife viewing opportunities. The Don Statter Harbor, 12 miles from downtown at the intersection of the Back Loop Road and Glacier Highway, is a good place to look for harbor seals and bald eagles, with sea lions frequenting the area. The harbor is the departure point for many whale watching cruises. Harbor porpoise and other marine mammals and sea birds are frequently seen on trips to and from Auke Bay. Lighthouse history Built in 1901, Sentinel Lighthouse Is Part of Alaska History Before the influx of people produced by the gold rush, Alaska’s waterways were marked only by an occasional buoy. Still, the United States had yet to build a lighthouse along the vast coastline it had acquired in 1867. Strong currents, fog, rain, and a rocky shoreline made navigating the Inside Passage most challenging, and in 1898 alone, over three hundred maritime accidents were reported along the twisting waterway. George James, a Juneau resident, was awarded a $21,267 contract to construct Sentinel Island Lighthouse. The project commenced on July 25, 1901, when men and materials landed on the island. To reach the six-and-a-half-acre island from Juneau, one had to sail along Gastineau Channel to Auke Bay and then follow Favorite Channel to its northern end where it joined Lynn Canal, a total distance of twenty-three miles.

Once our informative and delightful captain spots the whales, the boat slows and out you go on our spacious decks to watch these beasts in their natural summer habitat. Your Naturalists' commentary is full of information about our Humpback whales and other possible wildlife such as Stellar Sea Lions, Dall's Porpoises, Bald Eagles -and just maybe you'll see a transient Orca whale. Our humpback whales come to feed in our cool, rich waters near Auke Bay for the summer. Although we guarantee a whale sighting, we can't guarantee what the humpbacks can do - But, you will be delighted if they tail-slap, head lunge, breach, or gather for bubble-net feeding.
