Alaska Be Kind Bags evolved from the COVID-19 era when being isolated was somewhat the norm. I liked bags—in particular the hobo bag style—and sewing was therapeutic, so I designed a hobo bag that was reversible and had zippered pockets. I added a hand-stitched applique to one of the front panels and sewed a little bee inside one of the zippered pockets. I stored the bags in a tote in my guest bedroom. In July 2021, my granddaughter came to visit, and when I told her to select a bag for herself, she said, “Grandma, you should sell these bags.” A few days later when we stopped for a quick lunch before hiking on the Matanuska Glacier, a young woman asked my granddaughter where she got her bag and was there a website to order from. I continued to make bags and in March of the following year, I created Alaska Be Kind Bags. I design and make each bag as if I am creating the bag for myself. Sewing is still therapeutic, and I thoroughly enjoy making bags not only for myself but also for my daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. I also enjoy seeing my bags go to my customers, who have supported me in this venture. In addition to hobo bags, I also make small and large quilted tote bags from leftover fabric scraps. While I am passionate about making bags, Alaska Be Kind Bags is not my only focus as I also teach writing courses for the University of Alaska and supervise student interns in their classroom settings as they work towards their teacher certification. However, no matter how busy I am, I rarely have an evening where I do not spend some time sewing!
