Home to less than 4,000 people and the official finish line of the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, Nome is located on the southern Seward Peninsula coast on Norton Sound of the Bering Sea. Although small in population, Nome is a rich historical and cultural city, being the regional hub of 3 Alaska Native cultures: the Inupiat, the Central Yup'ik, and the St. Lawrence Island Yupik.

In 1898, the "3 Lucky Swedes" discovered gold in Nome, making it a key location on the gold rush prospector maps. No visit to Nome is complete without trying your hand at gold panning. And don't forget to take a picture with the "World's largest gold pan."
