Juneau Sled Dog Discovery & Musher's Camp
Your journey will begin with a 25-minute narrated drive over to Douglas Island. Upon arriving up at dog camp, you will be greeted with overwhelming excitement from our teams of dogs that can’t wait to take you on the ride of your life. You will then hop aboard our custom-designed wheeled summer sleds that sit 6 people, with the musher steering the team from the back. Relax and enjoy watching the 16 dogs in front of you run with their hearts and souls to give you an authentic dog sledding experience. Halfway through your ride, the musher will stop to snap some photos of you with the dog team in front, as well as to give these dogs a break---anything above 0 degrees is a warm summer day for them! Get your list of questions ready, because, after the ride, your group will proceed to the covered wooden area for the Musher Presentation where you will learn all there is to know about this sport and the mushing lifestyle from a real musher and a retired sled dog. If you haven’t gotten enough pictures up at our scenic camp yet, venture on over to our hanging bridge that overlooks Fish Creek and is surrounded by gorgeous Spruce and Hemlock trees. Enjoy bouncing on the bridge but remember to save some energy for puppy time! That’s right---we almost always have at least a couple of litters of pups up at camp ready to be loved on. In fact, it is very important for future racing success that they have ample human socialization, so you cuddling up with these adorable husky pups is actually helpful---thank you! After enough puppy kisses, you will board your bus and head back to your dock so you can continue exploring our state’s charming capital. Juneau Dog Sledding On The Mendenhall Glacier
Enjoy two exciting rides across the Mendenhall Glacier by helicopter and by dog sledding. Take in views of deep blue crevasses and glacier carved peaks as you ascend 4,000 feet to our Dog Camp on the Mendenhall Glacier. Mush like the Iditarod winners as you take in the still beauty of the Mendenhall Glacier and the Juneau Icefields. Enjoy time with our professional mushers and their Alaskan sled dogs. Chat about camp life with our experienced dog mushers and cuddle with Alaska husky puppies! What’s on your Alaskan bucket list? Flying high above breathtaking views of Alaskan landscapes? Walking on the famed Mendenhall Glacier? Zipping through the snow on a sled pulled by a team of Alaskan huskies? This tour offers all this and more. You begin at our comfortable heli-base where you will be outfitted in glacier boots and given a safety briefing by our friendly tour attendants. From here you will load up into our state of the art helicopters and be whisked away to begin your dog sledding adventure. Our highly trained pilots will narrate the scenic helicopter ride on your way to the main attraction, the mighty Mendenhall Glacier. During your flight you will have a bird’s eye view of the lush Tongass Rainforest, soaring mountain peaks, and the spectacular Mendenhall Glacier. As you touch down at our authentic dog mushing camp, you will be greeted by professional dog mushers and their energetic companions, the Alaskan Huskies! Experience the unique thrill as these athletes pull you through the snow that blankets the Mendenhall Glacier. Take turns directing the dogs with your musher and relaxing in the sled. After your exhilarating sledding experience, you will have time to cuddle with puppies and chat with your dog musher before boarding your helicopter to return to the heli-base. Join us on a once-in-a-lifetime adventure and check off that item on your bucket list.
Dog Sledding Summer Camp
Join us on an excursion where you will learn about Alaska’s official state sport with a trip to Dog Sledding Summer Camp. Your adventure begins on the breathtaking drive along Gastineau Channel, through the historic AJ Gold Mine site and into the remote and scenic Sheep Creek Valley. As you arrive at the summer camp training site, you will be greeted by a professional dog musher and some of the state’s most famous athletes: the Alaskan huskies! You will receive an educational tour of the camp, visit a 19th-century replica of an Iditarod Outpost and enjoy fresh baked cookies. Next, climb aboard a comfortable wheeled cart and relax as your energetic Alaskan husky team whisks you along the one-and-a-half-mile trail through the beautiful landscape. You’ll return to Dog Sledding Summer Camp for your chance to meet the dogs and snuggle the next generation of great Alaskan athletes: sled dog puppies! This family-friendly excursion is truly an authentic Alaskan experience. Enjoy a ride through the scenic Sheep Creek Valley in a wheeled-cart pulled by a team of Alaska Huskies! Our dog camp is complete with 120 huskies, including sled dog puppies. It is located on the site of the historic AJ Mine, so you’ll see mining relics on your way to camp. This tour does not include a helicopter flight.
