How to See Sitka in 8 hours
How to See Sitka in 8 hours
Sitka is one of the most beautiful destinations in Alaska. It was also the first Capital of the State when Alaska was purchased from Russia in 1867 (although it was first home to Tlingit Natives, who have lived in the area for thousands of years.) Today, Sitka maintains its small-town charm despite being the fourth largest city in Alaska and quickly becoming a premier Alaskan cruise ship destination.
If you’re traveling to Sitka, you will quickly become immersed in its rich history. Native Tlingit's lived in Sitka for more than 5,000 years before Russian settlers first established themselves in 1799.
The natural beauty of Sitka cannot be overstated. Situated on Baranof Island, Sitka is truly a land of fire and ice. Mt. Edgecombe is a dormant volcano that started rumbling with earthquake activity in the spring of 2022. Glaciers cover towering mountain peaks north of town. In between, lush temperate rainforests and the rolling swells of the Pacific Ocean create a nexus for all sorts of land and marine wildlife.
If you're visiting Sitka on a cruise or as an independent traveler, the most challenging part of your trip will be deciding what to do. This blog is all about helping you better understand your options to make the most of your Sitka visit, whether you're spending a day, a week, or longer.

Things You Need to Know - An Orientation for Your Sitka Visit
You want to be prepared to get the most out of your Sitka visit. This is especially true if you're traveling to Sitka by cruise ship because once you disembark your ship, you're going to want to have everything you need until you return.
This is especially true in Sitka, where the most-used cruise ship dock is privately owned and located six miles from the downtown area. This dock is called Sitka Sound Cruise Terminal. To get to town, it's necessary to take a free shuttle but pay close attention to departure times to and from Downtown Sitka because you don't want to miss your ship.
The Sitka Borough manages the complimentary shuttle. It departs the cruise dock every 15 minutes and drops off passengers at Harrington Centennial Hall, located in the center of downtown Sitka. You catch the shuttle back to your ship in the same place. Keep in mind that you will probably be on a different shuttle or bus if you book a shore excursion.
Some of the smaller luxury cruise ships will dock at Crescent Harbor, which is within walking distance of downtown for most people.
Sitka gets more than 130 inches of rain per year, so it's good to check the weather report when you get into port. Since it takes some effort to get to and from your ship, you should have everything you need to enjoy your day. Bring a raincoat, appropriate footwear, medication, and anything else you can't live without.
